The problem with these specs about Luke taking Lane, or Doula, or whomever to the hospital is that I can't believe the closest hospital to Stars Hollow is near Yale. If Yale has a hospital, surely Richard will be there or very, very close by. SH must have a hospital closer than that for people to have babies or deal with emergencies. They just shouldn't be at the same hospital for very logical reasons.

That's the biggest issue with all the specs about Luke just being at the hospital. In the real world, running from New Haven to nearest hospital would put you at a very different hospital than the closest one to SH.
I like the spec that Luke calls Lorelai to thank her for the letter and tell her how the case went. She'd probably tell him what happened with Richard and what hospital he's at, and Luke would be able to tell how upset she is, so he'd probably go just to check up on her. OR he could go to the inn to thank her for the letter. There really aren't many other pausible options.
