This isn't a bad film... But it was horribly under-marketed (to guys) and over-marketed (to teen girls) at the same time. The studio just didn't have enough faith the film would find its own audience and ultimately it got pigeonholed into being a "chick flick" when it is the farthest thing from this in my opinion.
Also, it was released at the end of summer -- Odd for a summer-themed film -- And in the wake of "Episode II: TPM" that year as well. Regardless, this is not a bad film for what it is:
It's lite, fluff-entertainment about amateur female surfers hoping to hit the big time and the choices and sacrifices they must make in order to balance everything out. Michelle Rodriguez and Senoi(sp?) Lake also hold their own (and are vastly under-rated) next to Bosworth which makes the film a great enssemble piece too.
