They were solid friends; beyond that, not much. Yes, it hurts when your friend dies- always will, unless you're a sadistic individual, in that case you'd need a whole lot of help; plus a solid divine intervention to even reset your conscience... neither of those women is *that* sadistic, however, not by a long-shot. So while it hurt the survivor, it didn't go much beyond that.
