I think they knew, but still the season was supposed to be the second semester of school anyway, it's always going to be like this, Safran said: each season is a semester. So it wouldn't mean anything anyway, I guess. The most weird thing is that it was a Valentine's Day episode and there was literally no romanitc stuff around
