I think been was unstable in the sense of being insecure, and that sometimes made him act out in ways not considered rational or mature.
Like that time Michael experienced a little success. Instead of being happy for him, Ben kinda developed an attitude.
He almost cheated with the bug chaser.. but it just took him finding out what the guy was up to for him to turn away. Only then did he really prioritize everything and re-evaluate certain decisions he was about to make based off emotions.
