Spotlight on Baz Luhrmann
Quote:
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
“One of the proud moments for us was Robert Wise, who directed The Sound of Music (1965) and West Side Story (1961), he is the great-great-grandfather of musical cinema, and he said, ‘I’ve seen Moulin Rouge! (2001) and the musical has been re-invented.’”
— Baz Luhrmann
The third entry into the Red Curtain Trilogy is Luhrmann’s reinvention of the movie musical. Moulin Rouge! is set in 1900 Paris, France and stars Nicole Kidman as cabaret performer and courtesan Satine and Ewan McGregor as lovestruck writer Christian. The story is told in a flashback where Christian recounts how he met and fell in love with Satine. The much coveted star is an object of obsession of the controlling Duke (Richard Roxburgh) which complicates Satine and Christian’s romance. The story takes place during the construction of the famous Moulin Rouge and leads up to a big opening night performance with tragic results.
Moulin Rouge! is a vibrant spectacle. Luhrmann was influenced by everything from opera, vaudeville, cabaret, Bollywood and classic literature. The movie was such a cultural touchstone of its time and over the years has developed its own devoted fandom. Luhrmann produced the movie soundtrack which includes renditions of popular 20th century songs including Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend, Material Girl, How Wonderful Life Is, Rhythm of the Night, and a Fool to Believe. It was particular famous for the rendition of Lady Marmalade performed by Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, and Pink.
The movie was nominated for 8 Academy Awards and won for Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction and Set Decoration.
