While her being dead is the only explanation that makes any sense, the writers intentionally left it open-ended in case they decide to bring her back, like they did with Madison. I don't like that decision and wish they would've given the fans closure, but that's what this show does. For that reason, I think she's still alive and there's a strong chance we'll see her again, even if that makes no logical sense and creates a plot hole.
