Maybe it's like the time travel in LOST instead of in BTTF? Where they were always part of the timeline/events and even if they wanted to change things, they can't because their actions/decisions were always part of the narrative. Or like Oedipus....where he tried so hard to change the prophecy but he was really just playing into it?
