I thought it was odd that he was waiting for Joey in order to lose his virginity, as if he thought she wouldn't sleep with her boyfriend after dating him for nearly a year. The very idea that he turned down Gretchen because of that is laughable. It just did not come across as believable, and it made him look ridiculous, since it appeared as if he was waiting for his friends' relationship to fail.
