It was, I think they would have been close, like family, for the whole duration of the show. There are some things that happened, like Angel firing everyone in season 2, that I kind of think couldn't happen if Doyle had been there, but if that was what the writers wanted, then it would have had to... so those kinds of things would have been hard to watch
