the comics are totally different. the comics gave them 13 years of a slowburn will-they/won't-they. they only became a couple finally in 2018.
they've had many, many good scenes in the comics, but it's difficult to compare to the show because they went on completely different journeys.
i would say it's more that josh & steph respected the SPIRIT of the comics and deanoru's relationship there.
the story was vastly different but you can see that if the comic characters had taken their tv show counterparts' routes (and vice verse), it would fit perfectly either way.
