Wow, I thought that I had posted more recently in this thread than I actually did. Anyway, I went through all the posts since. They did interact a little in Season 1, but she mostly didn't like him right away and she was still dealing with the Maquee stuff and adjusting to her new role.

I think it was showing them both maturing. Tom needed to realize that chasing every skirt wasn't going to lead to long term happiness. B'Elanna needed to realize that she was accepted and respected and let go of the chip on her shoulder regarding prejudice she'd experienced in teh past.

The show also had to move on from B'Elanna having romantic feelings for Chakotay.
Though Tom and B'Elanna's relationship isn't always easy, they love each other enough to work through its rough spots.  __________________
