I was SO thrilled to see Gilmore girls on the TV screen in my breakroom at work but then my heart sank when I realized it was the episode Jess first appears.

But it was kinda cool because some other girl who was on break made a comment, "He was such a dick" in reference to Jess and I did a happy dance in my head.

Well, firstly, I really don’t like Jess when he first comes to Stars Hollow. Like, I get that he was dealing with a lot but he was so rude and surly and horrible to everyone. Then I hated the fact that he deliberately tried to get in between Ror and Dean, constantly baiting Dean and making sure that Dean knew that he was trying to sabotage their relationship. Then, when they actually are together, he’s a really crappy boyfriend. He gets jealous over Dean, is constantly breaking plans and not letting Rory know where he is, he lies his ass off to her for a huge portion of the relationship (constantly telling her that he was attending school when he was actually going to work), makes her feel like crap, exhibiting mild signs of a toxic relationship (Rory getting angry with him for breaking plans, then him turning up with concert tickets and Rory going home afterwards looking and feeling ashamed and not confiding in her mother because she knows that Jess is treating her badly). And, of course, the incident in Kyle’s parents’ room, where Jess tries to push Rory into going further than she wants to and then yells at her for not wanting to lose her virginity in those circumstances.

Aside from their love of reading, Rory and Jess don’t really have a lot in common and are not particularly compatible. Jess doesn’t like to participate in town events or socialise with any of Rory’s friends. He has to literally be bribed to meet Rory’s grandparents and makes minimal effort with Lorelai, these being people who are extremely important in Rory’s life. He’s also uncommunicative and never lets her know what he’s thinking or how he’s feeling and as a result, Rory ends up feeling like crap a lot of the time during the relationship, as she expresses to Lorelai towards the end of the season (”I’m so tired of fighting. Or not even fighting because he won’t fight. He just gets mad and disappears and then comes back and I don’t like how I feel and I don’t like what I do.”)

And then he just leaves. He doesn’t even have the decency to break up with Rory or tell her that he’s taking off. He just disappears, leaving her in the dust and forcing Lorelai to inform Rory that he’s gone. I mean, yuck. That’s just cowardly and gross.

So yeah, that’s why I prefer Rory and Logan. Logan makes mistakes in the relationship (as does Rory) but they treat each other with respect, communicate well, work through their issues together and build an equal partnership.

I know it's kinda pro Logan which some of you disagree with and that's totally fair and fine, but I felt the Jess points were very well made and worth posting here.
