I’ve made an awful mistake. Our marriage was an awful mistake. Please, don’t say that. There were a thousand moments where I could’ve done something. Made secret treaties, sold favours, even snuck away to Scotland to be with those people who need me. And do you know why I didn’t? Because I love you. Because I am your wife. Mary, listen. When we have taken Calais, the first thing I will do is travel to Scotland with your uncle’s army. We can still save your mother. Like you promised you would take me to Scotland with my brother? Like when you promised soldiers the time before that, and the time before that? You make it sound like every promise I make is an empty one. What other promise can you make? You are the future king. It’s not that simple.

So, I have mixed feelings about the scene in the second gifset. I mean obviously I love the last part and the "come back to me" and gentle forehead kiss after it, but the beginning of the scene annoys me, because yes, Francis is a prince and a king to be, so it makes sense that SOMETIMES he should make these such sacrifices and difficult choices for his people and his country, BUT the same goes for Mary as well! I mean she literally put Scotland first just a few episodes ago where she threatened Catherine and France. people seem to forget that. So yeah, they were both rulers and responsible, therefore it makes sense for them to do those things, it's one of the things that made them a great ruler. but what I have a problem with, is that why Mary gave Francis a hard time and made him feel awful, while she did a similar thing herself not so long ago? Plus when Francis promised her those troops earlier in the epi, he was being genuine and she knew it. But anyway, I love the fact that despite how mad she was, still she couldn't help but to love him (which brings us to the last part of the scene ), and I love that they had similar positions/problems; "equals" finally I should also point out that despite him making these such sacrifices sometimes, there were many other times that he put her first, one of the best examples of it is in 2.18 when he sent troops to Scotland even at the time that he had basically every reason not to, let alone the fact that he literally died for her, so there's no doubt of his love being pure and unconditional

Yeah, I have to agree that Mary was being a bit hypocritical there. LIke you said, they are both rulers who are responsible for their people... and she would have made the same choice if the roles were reversed. She should not have called out Francis for making "empty" promises, when she knew that he had genuinely intended to deliver when he promised those troops to her. I understand why she is upset, though. It hurts to hear her call their marriage a "mistake" - suggesting that they might have been better off if they had married people who didn't have potentially conflicting political interests. We know that's not true. They are perfect for each other BECAUSE they are in the same position and understand the difficult choices that they each have to make. They are true equals.

Yes, the last part of the scene is so precious. No matter how upset Mary is, she does understand why Francis made the decision that he did, and she still loves him SO MUCH and doesn't want to lose him.

Aw those are perfect examples of times when Francis put Mary first. How could anyone doubt his devotion and his pure, unconditional love?

Tbh I never looked it or interpret it this way (probably because technically I wasn't an active fandom member at the time I was watching and was away from other people's opinions ), I simply took it as that she was saying she tends to put her love over her duty (which wasn't really true, as I already discussed) and she thinks she loves him so much that it prevents her from doing her duty while on the other hand, he seems to be doing his duty perfectly despite his love/feelings, therefore from now on she won't do it anymore, lol. The parts that made me think she was suggesting this, were :"there were a thousand moments where I could've done something. made secret treaties, sold favors, even snuck away to Scotland to be with those people who need me. do you know why I didn't? because I love you" and also at the end of the epi to her ladies: "Francis is trying to save his country and I can forgive him for that, as I hope he will forgive me for doing what needs to be done for Scotland, whatever that may be". But eh, this or that, the consequence is the same, and it's that she was simply wrong, lol.
