I was actually in love with Francis and Mary months before seeing Reign for myself. Gifs of their pretty scenes together were always showing up on my Tumblr dashboard and they just looked like the kind of couple I would fall in love with. Since I had a slight interest/fascination with history and royalty, I wanted to see Reign but only if it was going to go on for longer than a season. When season 2 got the greenlight, I spent the latter part of my summer watching season 1 and my shipping instincts pulled me in the right direction yet again as Francis and Mary captured my heart from the very first episode.

What makes them so special isn’t even the fact they have to rule together as king and queen, it’s the fact that they are just a boy and just a girl falling in love for the first time and if that love can withstand all the politics and violence around them. Their love and marriage has faced many tests, the one this season being the biggest one. There were times I began to wonder if it was worth it to believe in their love anymore because it felt like there wouldn’t be a light at the end of the tunnel. However, at season’s end when that light came, I realized once again why I would always believe in their love. Even in their darkest days, this boy and this girl never stopped loving each other. After all Mary and Francis put each other through, their love prevailed. Mary in particular made a lot of hurtful choices but at the end of it all, simply said, “I love you Francis. I always have… always.” No matter what, Mary will always choose Francis and he will always choose her. They will only be truly happy with each other at the end of the day.

How do I know that? Because of Adelaide Kane and Toby Regbo’s abilities to make us see and feel exactly how their characters feel for each other. Their chemistry is what makes me root for Francis and Mary, because it gives their characters a special touch that I can only describe as magical. I’m excited to see what the future holds for this epic and beautiful pairing.
