I think one of the things I really like about the Jane/Lisbon slow burn is that it wasn't based on the old "we're not allowed because we both work for the FBI" thing. For one thing, very few law enforcement organizations even have such a rule, and the FBI isn't one of them. I don't know about the CBI. But it's also just a boring reason. Jane's issues with Red John - his continuing grief and guilt over his wife - along with Lisbon's single minded dedication to her job were much more believable and interesting blocks.

If Lisbon was married when the show started, do you think Jane/Lisbon would still have happened?

I think it probably would, but with a much different progression. I can easily see Jane still falling in love with Lisbon, but since he had such issues initially getting with anyone, it wouldn't matter so much if she was married - he considered her off limits married or not. Lisbon would, I believe, be true to her marriage vows. But sometime around season 5 or 6, she began to become almost as driven to find Red John - or to help Jane find him - as Jane was. I think her husband might have resented the time she spent on that. If she kept up contact with Jane after he went to the island - especially if she kept that a secret - it might have been the last straw and her husband would leave her, feeling that even if she wasn't being unfaithful technically, her loyalties and affection were no longer centered on her husband. That would open the door for Jane and Lisbon to end up together.

I definitely have to rewatch b/c I'm forgetting so much. I haven't seen it since the original airing but these two were everything! I loved them so much. They always had that chemistry from day 1.

When the show first began, I instantly loved their friendship and chemistry but I didn't know if we would ever get them b/c of what happened to his family and I was unsure if he would ever be able to move on from that to have something serious with anyone else. So for a long time, I loved their friendship and how they were partners.

One thing I loved about their partnership was that she appreciated his genius and he appreciated her as well.

^^ This describes the appeal of the show so well. I loved that Jane had such emotional obstacles to overcome before he could ever be happy or love again - but he did manage to do that.
