So, why do we like Caroline/Will?

As far as I remember I liked them because of the differences in social background. Also it turned out they were both somewhat insecure in their dealings with romance and other people.

A. Because for the pleasure of watching Michelle Monaghan, I'm willing to try to suspend disbelief that a smart girl could possibly think Ryder is a nice guy. Not easy, but worth it. The girl's smile is to die for.


B. Because, in episode 4, it's so charmingly about making Will feel accepted by Rawley. Caroline can do for Will the one thing that Scout can't, in terms of assuring him that he "belongs" at Rawley. Caroline's a childhood friend of Scout's (as Bella is Will's), and Scout goads Will into chasing her. For Will, Caroline is Scout in girl form, much as for Scout, Bella is Will in girl form. It's about the love between the actual and the potential, between veritas and virtus. Rich/poor, straight/gay, young/old, are all symbols.

C. Because, in episode 7, Will gets to do for Caroline a bit of what Hamilton has done for "Jake:" to help heal an emotional wound, to save someone from despairing of love. For a guy's first sexual experience to be in context of doing that is ... perfect. (Will has already done that for Bella, asexually, when they were six years old -- just as Scout does it for Will, asexually, in YA 1.)

Revisiting reason (A) more seriously: the point of Caroline's naivete is, of course, that good can't comprehend evil. "What should be" is often disappointed, and when it is, "what is" must love it all the more. The only way to suspend disbelief in Caroline's naivete is to appreciate it symbolically. Take it at face value and it's incredible. But then, so is all of YA: it's all just too bood to be true -- in the usual, descriptive sense of truth that the Rawley motto challenges.

I'm agreeing with your first point, I mean I like Ryder but I like the bad boy version, can't imagine anyone considering him anything but that!

I never thought of your second point that way, Will being the male equivalent of Bella does seem true
