I don't know if there was really a concerted effort by critics to pan Passengers, but EW's Twitter has something against this movie. They were continuously posting how bad it was several times a day and now that it's a bomb. As if there's no other entertainment news out there.

What were they turned down for a cover?

Sony’s Passengers earned another $5.65 million (+26%) on its second Friday, paving the way for a $15.6m (+4%) Fri-Sun and $20.2m (-11%) Fri-Mon frame. That will give the $110m-budgeted Jennifer Lawrence/Chris Pratt sci-fi thriller/romance/etc. a $65.5m 13-day total. It is still playing close enough to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in terms of legs and numbers to give Sony hope for a $100m+ domestic total. The film may well kick butt overseas as well, with a release date in China allegedly set for Jan. 13. It may have an uphill climb, but it’s not dead yet.
Given the state of the union, not to bad.

if you guys do another Passengers topic, you gotta use that beautiful line from the film, "it's a helluva life!" in the title. i'm a big fan of Passengers, have to see it again!

I saw it for the fourth time tonight. I think that's it for me in the theaters.

I only caught the ending of Jen's appearance on Seth Meyers' special. "catdildos"!

i very much agree that Jen was impressive in Passengers, her range of emotions and visceral expression is amazing to watch. i am definitely going to see it again soon, probably right after i finish moving my furniture and stuff this week, gotta be out of the old place in the next several weeks.

Happy New Year, Jen, and all you fabulous fans of this hugely talented woman and feminist trailblazer.

I don't know. You think someone peed In their cereal with the over-reaction to all this they've done.

Yeah, but come on. We need to do all that we can. Prove it to the critics and make em eat it, yeah!

I was going to see it again today. But I didn't feel well. I'll see it again on Tuesday. I'm at 4 times I've seen it so far. But we need to do all that we can.

Exactly. Why you never trust a movie critic. They always have some agenda it would seem.

Well, see it again, and again, and again! You have the free time. Or don't you love Jen as much as I do?

Again never trust critics or scores. Be your own critic.

I missed her on Seth. I completely forgot that it was on earlier. and thought it air around midnight

I'm at 4 viewings so far. I might match my record for Mj2. Which is 8. But won't reach X-Men: Apocalypse 12. Or not even Joy. 10. But who knows.

The scene where she crawls back into her pod after seeing the video is

Passengers and Hope

Excellent (and long) review of Passengers. This guy really gets it.

Excerpts:
Quote:
It is not set in the splash of stars and colorful planetary close-ups of Star Wars, but the vast emptiness of space as we know it—a realm of mystery, largely untouched by human civilization. That sense of the sheer immensity of the cosmos, the thrilling beauty and monstrous terror of something greater than any human being, is something we return to again and again.
Quote:
In the midst of a crusade for a just society, our culture has tendency to treat humans as if they are morally perfectible. We can always do what’s right, at least with regards to the big things, if we only tried hard enough, if we were only properly educated, if society were only set up in the right way. Wrong is wrong; it shouldn’t happen and people shouldn’t get away with it.

But Passengers seems to question this assumption. There is another philosophy of humanity, a very old one, but often neglected in our generation. It’s the belief that people are morally flawed. We are all, to put it in Christian terms, sinners. Of course we shouldn’t do certain things, but that’s not the world we live in. The fact is that human beings do what’s wrong, and nothing we do is going to change that.

Jim woke Aurora. It wasn’t right, it wasn’t excusable, but it’s what he did. There’s no getting around that, no erasing the past, and no erasing his sin. As Gus said, “A drowning man will always try to drag you down with him. It ain’t right, but he’s drowning.”
This film didn't pretend what Jim did was okay or unavoidable. One thing that irks me about critics complaining about the "incorrect" morality in this film is that they are not criticizing a film-maker's mistake--they are criticizing his artistic choice. I forgot that forgiveness of sins is still a radical idea for some.

Quote:
The ship’s crew awakes to find a garden growing on one of the decks, an Edenic paradise that Him and Aurora have crafted over a lifetime together. Aurora narrates, having left behind a record of their story.
Chris compared this story to that of Adam and Eve several times in the press tour. This comment about Eden makes me realize that the story was something of a reverse-Genesis with Jim and Aurora leaving behind their selfishness and shame.

oh my god, that review was insanely beautiful. wow. a great review for a great film. the only thing that reviewer didn't touch on was fate. i believe in fate. fate was working overtime when Jim stumbled away from nearly ending his own lonely weary existence after over a year of solitary, and looked up and saw the sleeping beauty named Aurora. fate gave him another chance at life, and ultimately every person on board the Avalon, including the beautiful and questing writer Aurora Lane.

Jim could not have saved the Avalon by himself. he needed the help of Aurora, and the knowledge and access of Gus. fate was a major character in this film.

fate and the decisions you make or don't make, make the story very compelling and highlight the flaws of individuals and humanity itself, for better or worse. sometimes both.

beautiful storytelling, direction, settings, and above all, acting. both leads brought their A-game. two thumbs way up!!!
