totally agree i do love their friendship development from s1 to s10

& s7 is one of the biggest shifts in their relationship imo, they were a lot closer then & got way more storylines together

That was the best Season 5 episode You had 'Pivot', Phoebe trying to escape the Cop who ending up asking her out, and Joey doing his best flirtations on Rachel (remember when he pulls out the chair for her like a gentleman? )

The other storylines are good too, but Joey 'seeing Rachel first' was my fave part of it

I do think the whole significance of Joey "seeing Rachel first" was indicative of the writers' excitement about seeing them potentially paired together

It links with the moment in the S5 finale where he's playing that game with Chandler and he answers Monica to who he'd rather sleep with but then says "wow... I always thought it would be Rachel." He's clearly thought about it.

& I hope it was, but idk, the writers always said that they hadn't planned it out that far in advance...

I think they probably played around it with for a while, and perhaps thought about hooking them up in a casual way mid-way through the seasons.

As for the big romance, that didn't come until later They needed time to bond first, and living together allowed that to happen.

I always thought that the AU episode was a way of toying with Joey & Rachel, but I guess it was more just them considering what their options were

Their chemistry was the best thing about it. Plus, I loved Rachel's hair with all those clips

I do agree that they were testing the waters with JR there. I think they were aware of the potential backlash from RR fans who were always skeptical about seeing RR paired up with other people, not least their good friends.
