Honestly, I'd see it going down in the way my mother's side of the family did, back in the day. Using physical identifiers or nicknames to differentiate. My aunt got saddled with Big Sue, and my uncle's ex-wife got saddled with Little Sue.

Speaking of my family, since we didn't see Eric interacting with extended members of Donna's family (but we saw the opposite), how do you think Eric would fare at Pinciotti family reunions? Her Uncle Carmine came from north Jersey, and I wouldn't be surprised if the entire family came from there. Considering general Italian immigration patterns and such, with many initially residing in the northeast.

It's technically a headcanon for me, but it's a probable one. Since Donna stated the possibility of moving "back east" or to Paris in late season 3 (when she and Eric broke up). I've always headcanoned her being born in New Jersey, and moving to Wisconsin when she's really, really young.

I think Eric might be very awkward, trying to charm her family but not succeeding too well. Donna's uncle Carmine would be very protective of his niece, just like Bob is of his daughter, but with an extra bit of menace. Eric might go to Donna afterward and say, "I think your uncle's gonna have me whacked!"

Bob's Wisconsin accent is so exaggerated that he's definitely supposed to be from there. He and Midge got together in high school when she got pregnant with Valerie Donna, so Donna was very likely born in Wisconsin.

Speaking of Bob's accent, I had a teacher from Wisconsin (who'd moved to the state where I grew up). He had an obvious Wisconsin accent, and Bob's sounds similar but definitely over the top.

I've always seen the Pinciotti family as being fairly unstable. Like they love each other, but since Uncle Carmine likes to put people in dumpsters for messing with his rings, there's a lot of fighting. So Eric's pretty awkward, and has to tread very, very carefully.

Is it bad that I don't recognize the accent at all? Are upstate NY and Wisconsin on similar wavelengths, somehow? Other than the mind-numbing amount of snow and being fairly close to a major metropolis (NYC and Chicago)?

And anywho, in my broad, multiple verse-spanning hcs, Bob spends much of his summers in Wisconsin with his aunt and cousins. So that's how the Wisconsin accent trickled in, along with being there for over a decade by the time the show starts. He inherited the hunting cabin from his aunt, too. A young Bob and Midge in New Jersey holds a weird place in my heart, even though I don't ship them all that much.

Bob worked at a North Jersey deli (and got a Ford delivery van for that purpose), and he and Midge spent a fair amount of time in the city and at Coney Island. Donna also went to the World's Fair with her grandmother when she was four, very shortly before moving to Wisconsin. And since Bob and Midge had Donna so young, she and her parents lived with Marie (Bob's mother, hence Donna's middle name) for quite awhile. Until it all fell apart.

I also hc WB's family being from Detroit and Tulsa, Edna's family being from northern Appalachia, Jack's family being from Chicago and back east (settling in Point Place to oversee Wisconsin operations for their business), and Pam's family being from Canada. Kelso's father comes from Kenosha, and his mother's family is from Point Place. Bud is from Point Place, too, hence the connection.

And for Eric, the Sigurdson family goes way, way back in Point Place. As for the Formans, their roots only reach back to the late 1800s. Basically, as soon as they could afford to move away from the east (they were Irish, and left Ireland to escape the potato famine), they practically ran to Wisconsin.

Thus, Eric, Jackie, and Hyde were born in Point Place. Kelso was born in Kenosha, before moving to Point Place when he was seven. Donna was born in north Jersey, moving to Point Place when she was four. Since the show was never consistent about when Eric and Donna met, I meshed it in the middle, with the weird "you could have had me when I was four" line in the pilot.

Donna Pinciotti would get so annoyed at the fact "the new girl" gets to be called Donna while she's relegated to Big Red. She wouldn't allow Jugs-a-Poppin'. But she wouldn't hold it against you, just everyone else.

The show doesn't give us much info about the characters' extended families -- or even their at-home families (I want to know what Kelso's siblings are like besides Casey and the fact his sister is considered fat by Kelso's friends -- and bad on T7S for all those fat-shaming jokes for "laughs". Just awful). We know the Bob and Midge's relationship was quite unstable and emotionally volatile. Although they did manage to reconcile and smooth out -- until Tanya Roberts chose to leave the show to help take care of her husband. T7S is terrible with cast departures, as we say often, and Midge abandoning Donna for California makes no sense. Her abandoning Bob allso makes no sense, considering the state of their relationship until it happens. No build up for it at all.

Anyway, you were talking about the Pinciotti's extended family and Eric. And, yeah, I think Eric wouldn't know how to act or react because Carmine and others might act and react to what Eric says in unpredictable ways. Eric would eventually just walk away because everything he says seems to get him into deeper trouble, but Donna might try to reassure him that her uncle's responses are his way of showing approval and acceptance.

Donna [to Eric]: Your arms are still attached to your body. You're good.

Unless one has encountered people from a certain place, it's not uncommon not to recognize certain accents. And not all people from X-place will have the same accent or accent thickness. For example, two friends from a state other than mine, a state with a distinct accent, did not speak the same way at all. One friend had an accent no different than mine that I could discern. The other had an accent one would totally associate with that state.

Those are interesting headcanons.

Could be. Kitty's parents live in Phoenix during the course of the series (for the dry air? ). But they could've lived in Wisconsin originally. I haven't thought about it too much, but neither of Kitty's parents have any hint of a Wisconsin accent (neither does Kitty). My Golden Girls love makes me like to think Kitty's family might've hailed from Minnesota, near the fictional St. Olaf. Especially because Rose, whom Betty White played, had a Scandinavian background. (Of course, Kitty's father is the Sigurdson. We don't know where Bea's family hailed from).

I don't see Red's family as being Irish (at least in any significant way). I remember your previous explanation for the choice, and people can make up whatever backgrounds for the characters they want if the show hasn't filled in the pieces.

I don't really see Donna going for a position in student government in high school, when it's only a popularity contest. But in college, when student government becomes a bit more merit-based (not completely, because politics and life in general always have that popularity contest slant to it), do you think she would go for it?

Because I can absolutely see her running for office at some point during her adult years, especially during political times of turmoil (like around 2002-3, 2008-9, and 2016-7). As a progressive, activist candidate, of course.
