Comments: The show seemed to give Kelso special dispensation for his bad behavior. His actions weren’t nearly called out enough by the characters (and writers through them) whereas Hyde “breaking the [bro] code” by dating Jackie is treated as a nearly unforgivable transgression.

But Jackie and Hyde’s relationship is consensual and mutual while Kelso consistently forces himself – or tries to – on Donna when she’s in a relationship with Eric and when she and Eric are broken up. He gets called out on it only once, and in a jokey way, at the very end of “Roller Disco” (3x05).

Hyde and Jackie, however, are slammed in season 5 many times by Eric, Donna, and Kelso for betraying Kelso. Their relationship doesn’t betray him or anyone, though. Especially in light of the fact Kelso technically cheated on Jackie yet again in California before she sends him her break-up letter. Eric, Donna, and the show’s misguided and toxic loyalty to Kelso during the beginning of Jackie and Hyde’s romantic relationship is baffling.

So I address this problem in the comics and correct it.

Comments: I wanted to balance the power dynamic between Hyde and Jackie in this episode. The way Hyde expresses his frustration at Jackie is rather un-Zen of him. Instead of respecting her different point of view or even having a respectful debate about it, he’s self-righteous and judgmental while trying to re-bestow his anti-consumerist beliefs on her.

Clearly, he takes her POV as a kind of personal attack. He’s partly afraid she’ll expect him to provide her with material goods to prove his love, and he’s partly frustrated she’s still holding onto sixteen-years’ worth of programming from her parents. But evolving one’s POV can take time.

In the comic, Jackie feels embarrassed and hurt by how Hyde snapped at her and why. So she strikes back, with help from Kelso, by pointing out a flaw of his own. If he thinks a worthy romantic partner won’t buy into the belief that consumerism is love, then she thinks a worthy romantic partner will remember little details about the other’s likes and dislikes – and she makes sure Hyde gets the message.

This comic is both foreshadowing and an example of the Hyde/Jackie/Kelso dynamic that plays out during season 5; specifically, how Kelso uses his knowledge of Jackie’s likes and dislikes (and other minutia) to his advantage.
