LOL. The "right" way would be to add a discret band/text near the border, but it's also true that many people cut it off when it's there.
Personally, I'm kind of against either solution, it's so good to have the whole canvas of the pic free, if you want to use it for some art, for instance.

The real point is, it's not their picture. They were not the photographer or company that commissioned the photo shoot. The end. They have no right to put anything on it.

I think their reasoning is that they went through the "trouble" to find/get the picture, and the credit is because of that .
