Chicago Fire Show Runner Derek Haas Reveals the Scoop For Season 7

Does Gabby’s departure affect Otis (Yuri Sardarov) or Herrmann (David Eigenberg) at all since they’re in business together and they just opened Molly’s North, right?

It’s so funny. We were just talking about that in the writer’s room. It came up because we haven’t done a real Molly’s story in a while, like Molly’s either being in jeopardy from competition, or we had a time when the city was going to tear down the building Molly’s was in. We were just thinking about, “Oh, do we need a new Molly’s story?” And then it came up, “Who owns Molly’s? It’s Gabby, it’s Otis and it’s Herrmann, and then you’ve got Stella Kidd, who’s working there.” So, yes, I think we’re going to bring it up but not early on in this season.

Remember before Molly’s was a success, Herrmann went through one bad business venture after another.

Yes, he did. Those instincts for Herrmann never quite die. He’s always looking for the next get-rich-quick scheme. He kind of did it with the Slamigan again in this last season. It was Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) and Brett’s invention, and he wanted to jump on that, so we’ll see a little bit more of that this year.

Boden lost his promotion to Carl Grissom (Gary Cole), who was sneaky, so he’s returned to Firehouse 51. There have to be repercussions from that, especially since the trailer for the new seasons shows this guy named Jerry snooping around the firehouse.

Yeah, so Jerry Gorsch is our newest pot stirrer in Firehouse 51. He is played by Steven Boyer, who’s a really phenomenal actor. Basically, he’s Grissom’s lackey, his right hand, that he sends to Firehouse 51 to keep a closer eye on the house and to really be a thorn in Boden’s side, based on the repercussions of Boden trying to stop Grissom’s ascendency in the cradle. He’s an assistant deputy commissioner who will be working out of the firehouse.

And since Severide sided with Boden will that have repercussions for him, too?

Yes, it will. You’ll see that in the first episode. Grissom is not of the mentality of letting bygones be bygones. He holds grudges.

So, Severide is also with Stella. Smooth sailing or rocky road?

Smooth sailing for now and then because this show is called Chicago Fire, it’s never quite an easy road. I think the fans of Stella and Severide are going to be happy, at least for the first half of the season.

Is Severide half-sister Katie going to be hanging around?

I really want her to come back at least for an episode, but the only question is she’s a regular on The Magician, so it becomes a scheduling thing where our first ADs have to talk to their first ADs and figure out can we get her and how long can we get her for. So, she’s not going to be in multiple episodes but I’m definitely trying to get her back for one. I love bringing characters back who were in the show before.

What about Brett’s romantic life? Are she and Antonio going to work, or is she going to find somebody else?

There’s going to be a new man coming into the firehouse. I don’t want to give anything away because it has to do with the plot, too, but there’s a new man coming into the firehouse that might be the right fit for Brett.

Interesting, because she and Antonio (Jon Seda) seem so good together, but they always have things that get in the way.

I’m not going to throw water on that completely because I think I might be the biggest fan of Brett and Antonio. It just becomes very hard from a physical production standpoint because he’s starring on Chicago PD, and she’s starring on this show even more so this year, so the real-life scheduling problems of trying to keep a multi-cross show relationship are tough. We can do it when it’s our side characters, like a Platt (Amy Morton) and a Mouch (Christian Stolte), but we tried to do it before with Severide and Lindsey (Sophia Bush) on Chicago PD, and it’s really hard. We’ve tried to do it with Antonio and Brett a few times. It’s hard.

Chicago One is a big change for you, with both a new day and a new time. Any concerns about that, or do you think it’s a good thing to put all the shows together like ABC did with Shondaland on Thursday nights?

I’m not being political here. I am so happy. I love it. We were on Thursday night at 10 last year for the first time, and it was a tougher slot, in terms of our lead-ins. Our lead-ins were comedies, not dramas, so you’re asking an audience to flip a switch and then be into a different show.

The fact that we’re going to have Med again as our lead-in — it’s been a couple of years since we had that — is very exciting for me, and from a storytelling standpoint, I think these three shows go so well together.

Obviously, they’re in the same family but we do many crossovers, especially on Chicago Fire. I think even more than Med and PD, we are constantly at the hospital or interacting with the police, so it’s just going to be, I think, one-stop shopping in a lot of ways for people.

I talked to Diane Frolov and she said that on the second episode of the season, they’re going to flipflop and Fire will be at eight and Med will be at nine because the story starts on Chicago Fire, so it seems that they can move things around to accommodate story.

I hope that’s not too confusing, but we’re selling the second week as our gigantic event, which is honestly the biggest episode we’ve ever done on Chicago Fire, and it’s a three-way crossover. It just naturally works that if you have a giant fire, or incident, or accident, the next step is to go to the hospital and help the people, and then the next step is to find out who did it, and that’s why we put them in that order, but just for that week.

What will the big event be?

It’s a giant fire inside a residence tower, so it’s our first time really to do a big downtown tower fire. Multiple units involved. You’re going to have tons of firefighters, a huge presence, and then I will say, here’s my teaser, we did a stunt with Severide dangling outside the building that is not green screen. People are going to be watching it going, “How did they do this?” We did it, and I was so proud of our stunt crew and Taylor, honestly, for doing it because my knees start knocking if I get above the 20th floor and here he is dangling off the side of this building. It’s really impressive. Mission: Impossible style.

How come there were so many sneak peeks for the premieres but not as many for the crossover?

Question: Anything on Chicago Fire? —Jesse
Ausiello:
If scheduling allows, showrunner Derek Haas plans to not only bring back Severide’s father and mother (played by Treat Williams and Kim Delaney), but also the firefighter’s half-sister Katie (Brittany Curran), who last appeared on the show in 2014. “We’re doing that dance with casting and her schedule on The Magicians,” Haas says. “But I talked to Brittany — she wants to do it. We’re really hoping that it will work out. She’s in the script.”

♦ CHICAGO FIRE: You know how there hasn’t been a LGBTQ character on Fire since Shay died in the Season 3 premiere? I hear that’s about to change.

Chicago Team Previews Crossover's 'Harrowing' Danger, 'Intense' Halsteads

NBC’s latest crossover event between Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago P.D. (kicking off this Wednesday at 8/7c) has it all: a fiery inferno, several lives in limbo, a gravity-defying stunt and plenty of tears.

Following a high-rise apartment complex blaze, “we end up in the ER with somebody incredibly significant to us, who made a sacrifice, and their sacrifice has a price,” Fire cast member David Eigenberg previews. “So we’re on edge as to what’s going to happen with the person.” Emotions escalate when the firefighters and the Med docs become “at odds” about “what the best course of action and treatment might be,” Med star Colin Donnell shares. “Risks are taken, people are mad and confused and fighting for what they think is right.”

But that Fire team member isn’t the only one in jeopardy. Read on for scoop about the danger to a loved one, a Mission Impossible-style moment and much more crossover action.

ALL THE TEARS | Prepare for a “very powerful” storyline involving P.D./Med brothers Jay and Will Halstead that “deals with their past and their relationship to their father,” Med executive producer Andrew Schneider says. According to star Nick Gehlfuss, the siblings are “scrambling” to figure out if their dad was in the burning building. His on-screen bro Jesse Lee Soffer warns to expect “heartbreak” during the “really intense” plot. “You’re going to see Jay really broken down in a way you haven’t seen him before,” Soffer describes. “He totally loses it for a second. It’s going to be upsetting, but hopefully, it’ll be really great TV.”

FIREFIGHTERS ON THE BRINK | “Stella Kidd decides, in the fire, that she’s going to work through [it], whether or not she has oxygen left in her tank,” Fire showrunner Derek Haas previews, “and it’s going to be harrowing for Kidd, because her co-firefighter and also happens-to-be boyfriend might be in danger.”

Meanwhile, Otis faces his own crisis, which brings him to Med psychiatrist Dr. Charles, whose portrayer Oliver Platt reveals that Otis “comes into the hospital after something happens to him. Firemen are tough. How they process difficult events, it’s complicated. …. It’s a good, old-fashioned [plot about] Dr. Charles trying to figure out what’s going on with somebody [and] how much are they fronting.” The storyline took “a lot of prep for me,” Fire actor Yuri Sardarov adds. “I don’t think it’s the last that we’ll see of it.”

HIGH-WIRE ACT | Haas raves about a stunt involving Fire leading man Taylor Kinney, aka rescue squad lieutenant Kelly Severide. “He is dangling, for real, off the 23rd floor of a famous Chicago building!” Haas exclaims. “There’s no green screen. With a kid in his lap, by the way! He’s doing it Mission Impossible-style.” And the final product is so convincing, it fooled the show’s own crew. “There’s a pretty great profile shot of the backdrop of the city,” Kinney recalls. “[The director] was in an editing room, and the editor said, ‘Where did you guys green-screen that? How did you do it?’ He’s like, ‘No, that’s real. That’s Taylor, and that’s Chicago, and we shot that.’ It has a really cinematic feel to it.”

AN UNEXPECTED CONNECTION | Severide will also spend time on Med and P.D., where he will share scenes with his longtime friend/former flame April as well as Jay, with whom he has something of a tense history. This time around, however, “Severide comes through for him,” P.D. showrunner Rick Eid says.

One Chicago - Crossover - Advance Preview

Welcome One Chicago fans! We are treated to the crossover early this year and it is a doozy! In the spirit of #OneChicago, the previewers for all three shows have come together and combined our previews! So please enjoy some teases from myself, Beth (Chicago Fire), Michele (Chicago Med) and last but certainly not least, Gina (Chicago PD).

CHICAGO FIRE: GOING TO WAR
CHICAGO MED: WHEN TO LET GO
CHICAGO PD: ENDINGS

Chicago Fire (Hour 1) Preview by: Beth

Chicago Fire starts us off for the crossover and they tee up a great start to what I dare say is the best crossover to date.

The day starts off like any other at 51 with Emily roaming around trying to get her bearings on the history of 51. She seems to be getting on better with Boden now. The bell goes off during all of this and we are off to the madness.

Now please correct me if I am wrong but to my recollection, a massive high rise has never been tackled on Fire yet, so this fire is especially scary. The team is quick to pitch in as always, but surprises and tragedies await them as they navigate the fire. Otis is especially affected by what happens in this episode and I think it will have long standing effects on him.

Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) of Chicago PD is the first face we see from one of the other shows, and he has an extremely personal connection to this fire, his father. 51 of course is there to help one of their own in the One Chicago family, but it is who helps his father that makes it hit home. Several members of the house have some heroic saves during this fire and if 51 was real, I would want them saving me all day.

Finally, in the midst of chaos a great moment happens for one character that will help them move past some sadness that they have been experiencing since the last season finale. Additionally, someone from our house is injured which tees up a trip to Med and begins the next act of the crossover.

Now I will hand it off to Michele for some teases about Chicago Med!

Chicago Med (Hour 2) Preview by: Michele

We seamlessly pick up for hour two inside Chicago Med's ER. Tensions are high as four victims, including one of our own firefighters as well as the Halstead patriarch, are wheeled in for treatment. Per usual, Med focuses heavily on family and interpersonal dynamics. Our firefighters spend most of this hour in the hospital wings, watching over their wounded. When Dr. Rhodes makes a medical call that would forever impact the life of a firefighter, the CFD has trouble letting it go without taking the opportunity to tell you what family means.

In the first hour with Fire, we only glimpse into Jay Halstead's concern over his father's well-being, and as hour two progresses, it only intensifies. Brothers Will and Jay have several emotional blowout scenes as they each deal with the effects of the fire in their personal lives and respective professions. Also, Manstead wedding planning takes takes a backseat this hour, but we do get to see them support one another through the episode.

This episode also spotlights a much deeper, and real world storyline that I expect will come up again later this season. Otis's experience during the fire leads to one-on-one time with Dr. Charles in the ER. By the hour's end, something Otis says really resonates with Dr. Charles. Watch out for a particularly powerful scene delivered by Fire's actor Yuri Sardarov and Med's actor Oliver Platt.

For the last hour preview, we hand it off to Gina and PD!

Chicago PD (Hour 3) Preview by: Gina

The official synopsis of the episode is:

After discovering the true cause of the high-rise fire, Intelligence races to find the man responsible. And for Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), it's personal.

So I should mention up front, even though I write for SpoilerTV, I'm not a huge fan of giving away spoilers for episodes that haven't aired yet. So, that being said, here is my preview and what I can't say in words, hopefully the pictures tell you all you need to know.

This episode, and the characters from Chicago P.D. in the crossover is what makes Chicago P.D. so good to watch. This episode is mainly focused on Jay Halstead played by the amazing Jesse Lee Soffer who showed his brilliance years ago on the soap As The World Turns. The last 10 minutes of the episode is why this show is so good. Tracy Spiridakos' of NBC's Revolution (Detective Haily Upton) performance was great, as well as Patrick John Flueger (Officer Adam Ruzek) who stared in The 4400, and Jason Beghe (Sergeant Hank Voight) helped round off an episode of intensity in all manner. Jesse Lee Soffer at the end of the episode is why he is my favorite character in a cast of great actors. Please watch, I know I am.
