Evanescence - evanescence music genre?

Can anyone tell me what genre they think ev is cos i personally believe they are metal cos i listen to lots of metal and it's what i always believed ev was, but whenever i say this to other people i get evanescence is not metal!!!! Is this just because they are so popular?? Because if that's the case then any metal band that then becomes popular should no longer be classed as metal anymore!?? That's just nuts! So what is ev then, pop??? Please tell me your views on this cos it bugs me that i'm not even sure what genre my favorite band is!

Good idea for a thread Cazza

I've always thought of Ev as rock....is that a genre?

I guess one of the best things about Ev is that they are difficult to label one thing or the other and that they have fans from both the metal and pop genres.
Some of their songs are quite poppy - I think of Everybody's Fool, My Immortal and Call Me When Your Sober as pop songs (which i love by the way

)
But then you have songs like Tourniquet and Snow White Queen which are definetely not pop

i guess there are pop elements to ev but alot of the bands i listen to are alot like ev but people class them as metal though, like within temptation for an example, i love them too and people class them as metal but they are so much like evanescence don't you think? Is it just cos ev are popular even with people who like pop where as within temptation are not so popular? I think i'm always gonna be confused about this i guess, but i think you're right ss some songs of ev do have a pop feel to them

I always considered Ev to be Goth Rock. When I think "metal" i think hard-edged, loud, wailing music where lead guitars dominate the sound - Metallica, Soundgarden, AC/DC, Poison, Judas Priest,etc. Ev is dominated by piano and Amy's pure voice. Compared to some similar bands Ev are unique in that Amy's voice defines the sound so much - she is almost a "genre" unto herself.

Too true AG, i think i could live with goth rock, so much better than pop!!

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised to see a wave of "copy" bands come along with female, piano-playing front women trying to emulate Amy's style.

Love your av too Cazza, is it of anything in particular.

Goth rock seems like the most reasonable catagory, I dont think they are metal, metal is a bit louder and has more screaming in it, Evs songs are soft like AG said.

I can live with that too, really as long as no one classes them as pop! I can live with it
