6x17 - A Bird In A Gilded Cage - March 19th

DAMON TRAVELS TO THE 1903 PRISON WORLD — With the help of Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Kai (guest star Chris Wood), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) set forth a plan to rescue Damon’s mother Lily (guest star Annie Wersching), who is trapped in the 1903 prison world. Meanwhile, when Caroline's (Candice Accola) plan for Stefan (Paul Wesley) backfires, she is left to pick up the pieces. Elsewhere, back at Whitmore College, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) and Alaric’s (Matt Davis) attempt to reel Caroline back in doesn’t quite go as planned when they realize they're outmaneuvered. Lastly, an unexpected gift from Bonnie leaves Damon shaken to his core.

It doesn't work because everyone on the show has a horrible life yet they use Damon's relatively tame past in comparison to excuse his behavior. I never saw a reason for Damon to be as terrible as he is, Katherine for example was given a way better back story and far less pity in present day. Not being loved sucks, yeah, but when other people are losing their entire families then it's not much of a sympathy draw.

And this ****ty ass show always fails to mention that Stefan loved Damon even if no one else did, and he treated him the absolute worst. Katherine and his parents may have screwed him over but Damon has had almost 200 years to forge sincere relationships in the meantime and he could've had the best one with his brother, so it's beyond me why I should feel sorry for him.

The whole thing is ridiculous. ONE fking woman who he knew was interested in his brother didn't love him and he wasn't his dads favourite son, which somehow amounts to he's NEVER been loved.

Point made. All very true. I just think that Damon's story could have gone differently/better if he actually wanted to change instead of tear others down to his level. The writers screwed themselves with this character. If they started to show how he wanted to change it should have been in S2 when he admitted how much he missed being human instead of wanting to suppress that and become even more of an ahole. Then we have people now excusing his terrible behavior all the time instead of holding him accountable so he feels the need to want to be better. It's terrible.

I know this has probably been brought up before, but is Elena ever going to get her memories back?! I know it was stated in an interview in January that she wouldn't at the time, because they wanted to show that Elena had those feeling for Damon no matter what. I get that, I respect that, I even think it was a cool idea. BUT...that doesn't mean I want all those other moments forever gone from her brain. Again not insulting the show or the decision to wipe her memory, it served it's purpose, but I still want those memories back. Any word on that?

Yeah they made a lot of mistakes with his character and it's everything combined that makes him so horrible. This would be the first season in which he seems to be growing up a little. SIX seasons into the show.

I (and a lot of people in here) think Elena will be turning human at the end of the season and that's when her memories will come back. I haven't seen any other theories for how/when they'll come back but maybe someone has one. Regardless I'm sure they aren't gone forever.

The only other theory I've seen is that when Damon selflessly gives Elena the cure, it'll be a callback to him selflessly giving her the necklace in 3x01 and trigger her memories.

Oh maybe. I could see both happening because would turning Elena human even bring the memories back? Does it work in reverse too, like compulsion wears off going from vampire to human?

Why does it matter if Elena doesn't get her memories back? She's still the same gross dumbass she was beforehand. It's not going to change anything so idg what the point of it was besides showing she loves Damon despite anything.
