Such a great film and I loved that it was period set.
Angelica Houston played such a great villain! |

Note Bene, mostly to myself:
Whoever first said, "to thine self be true" -- I was paying attention when I chose my username, because I am addicted to romance movies, and Ever After is unquestionably one of my favorite go-to's when I want to feel warm fuzzies in my tummy. Drew Barrymore is absolutely luminous. She, the inheritor of the fabulous Barrymore acting chops, she of the famous drug problems while still a child... transformed herself and her entire family's reasons for being famous, IMO, by embodying my favorite fairy-tale heroine in this movie. My two favorite quotes from the movie are "... and I was second-choice to Michaelangelo, who was stuck on his back painting a fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome," (a cunning nod to the rather infamous feud Leonardo da Vinci carried out against Michaelangelo because he was vexed by the fact that his commissions carried lesser fees than his rival's, at least according to fellow artist and author of Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Artists, -- if you have any interest in art history in general, or in the history of Renaissance art in particular, you might want to give the book, generally known as Lives of the Artists, a whirl, particularly because Giorgio Vasari was on first-name terms with all of the artists he profiled, so it turns out to be a rather cheeky, gossipy account about the inner workings of artists you've only ever heard spoken of rather reverently by museum docents...) and the final words the elderly "narrator" speaks to the Brothers Grimm, "...while Cinderella and her Prince did live happily ever after, the point, Gentlemen, is that they lived." Even more kudos go out to Angelica Houston (herself also amongst Hollyweird's acting royalty) and Dougray Scott (who is, quite frankly so hot that I don't care that that rhymes because I'm too busy fanning myself, lol). |

I love the way you described Drew "absolutely luminous." I so agree, she's one of my favourite actresses and I've been watching a few of her films the past few evenings since re-watching Ever After!
Thanks for the book recommendation too, I love that real historic barbs like that are thrown in to films like this, gives them more authenticity to the time. And my favourite quote of the movie is the second you quoted. "They lived" |
