But let's not digress and focus on my forever babes, Alicia and Will.

When I first heard the news that Josh was back for the finale, I screamed a gigantic NO. Not because I didn't want Will back, but because I was terrified by what the Kings might have done with him or what more memories could they ruin that they hadn't already in the previous flashbacks. But for once, they didn't disappoint.
I still remember old discussions about Alicia being Will's moral compass. In this finale, we saw Will being Alicia's romantic compass, that he somewhat helped her decide what she really wanted in life (whether one loves her decision or not, that's another thing). In its tragedy, I think it's such a beautiful thing. Two years later, even if all in Alicia's head, they still complete each other.

One could question that she's taking as compass an idolized notion of Will (to use Peter's words) and I honestly see nothing wrong with that, because if anything, she's setting a high bar, admitting that even if nobody will ever be him, she can still have a chance to try to be happy. Because at some point, you have to move on.

It's been two years. Over these past two seasons I've seen so many complaints over Alicia's grief. That she grieved too much, that she didn't grieve enough, that it was unrealistic to go from feeling perfectly fine to be back crying for no reason over a lost love. I don't know who of you kept watching the show after Will's death. I personally did. Even when just the idea of pressing "play" reduced me to tears. I suffered with Alicia, in and out, for the past two years. And it still hurts.

My thought? It was probably the best portrayed grief I've ever seen.

Because if you ever lost someone important, like I personally did, you can't help but relate. And the way the Kings handled her loss has been magnificent from beginning to the very last scene. Because that's exactly how it works. One day you are fine, one day you hear a song, a name, see a picture apparently unrelated and you crawl back where you started. That's what Alicia did over these past two years. That's why she needed to say those words... "I'll love you forever." And we all needed to hear them.

That's the only way she could move on.

There won't be a day in my life when I won't miss them, when I won't wonder how things would have gone if Josh hadn't left. We will never see them be happy together again, but we got the confirmation to something we've always known. Their love was real.

Probably little of this post makes sense because I'm still elaborating the finale and the thoughts in my mind are still confusing and constantly moving, but my love for these two is a constant

There's probably a lot more I'm missing now but that's pretty much the most significant stuff.

I do think that Julianna did give a great performance and I do agree they captured the stop-start way that grief can come over you in waves.

The only thing that was wrong with it all was Will not really being there.

They could have brought him back in so many different ways, but I love what they did it, it couldn't have been more meaningful. I think this was their way of giving us, A/W fans, closure. Correct me if I'm wrong but pretty much nothing else mattered in the finale, it was like a gift for us.

I like to think that Alicia and Will got their "endgame" in their own way. We don't know what is next for Alicia because it was an open ending but what we know for sure is that she will love Will till the end of her days and that he was the love of her life, and that's all that matters to me, that's all that has ever mattered: Alicia acknowledging her feelings for him. And they did love each other more than anybody else

Sadly, yes. And we were so close to the #100, it sucks, we've been stuck since season 5. They took even this away from us

I totally agree with this. I've enjoyed everytime she remember him on any way since his death.
She was never a very demostrative person and that's one of the reason it took her so long to finally acknowled her love.

And I am glad she did, even if she said it to a ghost, I think Will knows(?). I am glad that there is no doubt that he was the love of her life. Peter who? Finn who? Jason who? NO, it was always Will, I am proud of seeing that from the beginning haha

I really wanted to just jump when I saw Will. But I prepared myself every time a scene was over. That's probably all we get of Will and I was okay with that. I was prepared for one scene, like flashback. We got, as you said, so much more than that. We got Will as he was. He was the one always in the law and always about Alicia. In the end when they were in her apartment and Will telling Alicia she would be crazy in that apartment by herself and have her imagine someone there with her. To me, it was like Will telling Alicia he just wanted her to be happy and to move on with whom she wanted to move on with. Will would be okay, he was giving her advice on how to move on from him. I think that was so important. That Will, in the afterlife, was okay with Alicia moving on, he always just wanted her to be happy.

But I did get an idea that there were two versions of Will. Will in the office when Alicia told him it was good seeing him again, he replied "Where did I go" with a serious tone. It was a scene for us, the fans, to feel like it was a now scene and not a flashback for Will to wonder where he went and not to know that he died. The scene felt very real that Will had not died for that minute or so that the scene aired. Then his last scene in the apartment, Will giving her advice to move on because he couldn't be with her in the physical sense, but would always be guiding her in the emotional sense.

Then their hug at the end. They never got to say goodbye to each other. That was important. Will died with virtually no sign of Alicia around him, the woman he was in love with since college...season 2 proved that. Will got to say goodbye to the woman he's always going to love and she will always love him back. That scene hurts to watch, it means so much. It essentially sums up Season 2 and 3 perfectly in one moment.

Yeah I kinda agree with this. Even though it would be lame for Will to "leave" and Alicia not to go after him, he still wouldnt have died. It would have been easier to handle then him freaking dying! Plus like someone said, even if he didnt come back, Alicia could have left to find him or something.

Writers could always do better with their OTPS then they choose to when actors leave. Its frustrating.

Exactly. And even if I'm mad at Josh Charles, I'm very gratetful for what he did in the finale and I have to admit he never lost Will's essence. His portrayal was very good, if felt as if he had never left. In two scenes he reminded me of why I loved Will so much, and he stayed the same, as a ghost or in Alicia's mind. And that's what matters, that Alicia remembers Will as the good guy and the amazing friend he was for her, her moral compass. I loved it

Yeah me too, even if he had got back for the finale, I'd have hated Alicia for not going after him. Two seaons and a half with Alicia knowing Will's somewhere and not going after him would have completely ruined Alicia/Will for me I think. And btw, that would have been quite a challenge for the Kings, I mean, they'd have had to write Alicia's struggle of "will / won't" chase him, they took the easy way and killed him off

And let's be honest, Will had a HUGE impact on Alicia's lilfe, I don't think it would have been realistic if he was alive somewhere else. Alicia and Will's lives touched at so many points, I just don't see it. And tbh I'd been scared of the Kings writing this, I don't trust them

CBS posted an Alicia/Will video called "Alicia and Will forever: a love story". Are The Kings and CBS hearing themselves? I feel like they're selling me that Alicia and Will got together for real, idk, like they forgot he's dead

I feel blissfully deceived, not that I mind that much

But it's funny watching them try!

Btw, I was thinking about doing a survivor game. We did one for s1 and another for s2 so maybe a s3-7 one or an all seasons survivor of alicia and will's best moments. What do you guys think? Are you up for it?

This is truly proven why Josh Charles was born to play Will Gardner. He just slipped back into Will's glove perfectly. It was like he never left the series and it was just another episode for him. I loved seeing him again. His line "where was I," was so poignant because seeing him again was like he never left.

We can't ignore that the character was killed off. But the Kings are making it look like Will's death didn't have an impact as it did. Will Gardner leaving killed the series. He wasn't involved in every scene every episode but he impacted the lives of everyone. Josh impacted the lives of everyone. He's just that guy you want to work with. He always put his life into the character. It was evident seeing him again.

And when you think of it he was the link between all the characters. He was the one who interacted the most with Kalinda, Diane and Alicia. D/K didn't exist until Will's death, which was the only good thing that came out of this tbh, I loved how protective Kalinda was of Diane. A/K died in S2 and Will was the only bridge between them. The D/A feud will live forever but when Will was around it was different.

Yes, we did it on this thread, during the s1 and 2 hiatus. The season 1 winner was their first kiss in "Heart" and the season 2 winner was the elevator scene from "Closing Arguments". I was thinking about doing an all seasons survivor (choosing the top 25 scenes or so) or doing a survivor for scenes from s3 to 7. What do you think?
