Oh I completely agree. It definitely is not always necessary. And sometimes, it's even better. Unfortunately a lot of TV show runners feel like they have to couple up their lead characters. In some cases, I feel the storyline would be so much more complex and so much better if they didn't.

That's probably the biggest flaw though, because it depends almost entirely on aesthetics and just throws the plot and development in as an extra.

And since this of course goes wrong you've got to make it interesting somehow by teasing and drawing things out needlessly *sigh*

I think they feel like they need to please the fans.

I remember one of the commentary tracks on the Alias discs. Talking about pleasing the fans and the powers that be. So they changed things that they would have left go longer. Don't remember what exactly.
