Rogue Squadron was an elite Rebel Alliance starfighter squadron founded by Commander Narra, Luke Skywalker, and Wedge Antilles shortly after the Battle of Yavin out of Red Squadron. Rogue Squadron played a key role during several engagements in the Galactic Civil War, serving as the primary defense squadron of the Alliance High Command. The squadron mainly fielded T-65 X-wing starfighters, but flew other craft as well, including T-47 airspeeders and Z-95 Headhunters. They participated most notably at the Battle of Hoth and later at the Battle of Endor while reorganized once more as Red Squadron. Following the first death of the Emperor, the Rogues served the New Republic and Galactic Alliance in several critical campaigns, including the Liberation of Coruscant, the hunt for Ysanne Isard, Yuuzhan Vong War and the Second Galactic Civil War.

Wraith Squadron, also known as the Wraiths, was a hybrid New Republic starfighter/commando unit developed in 7.5 ABY by Wedge Antilles. The original Wraith Squadron was largely made up of wash-outs and misfits, which gave the unit a number of psychologically and emotionally unstable pilots, albeit experienced members of the military with useful commando skills. The Wraiths were designed to fulfill the mission responsibilities of both a traditional starfighter squadron and a commando unit—a revolutionary concept in tactics for the New Republic, and one that its founder felt was an essential development for the New Republic.
