I love Mulan, it one of my favorite Disney movies-- although it is very unappreciated.
The songs, the drama. It was much more sophisticated than other Disney films in my opinion and great to grow up watching. It's one of the few films where I enjoyed both the male and female characters interactions within the plot. It breaks alot of stereotypes and sends a good message.

and Shang.. was just a treat to watch.. all of him.

I just watched the sequel and I gotta say--
I couldn't help but feel disappointment. It had so much potential to have a real story, more than any other Disney sequel, I thought.

The art was, I guess, to be expected, but Shang-- he was just unbearable. ( And this is coming from an avid Shang lover) They turned him into a goofy nuisance of a character with the pointless arguments, his exaggerated mannerisms and facial expressions. It took all of my restraint not to personally cuss out the Disney execs. Mushu was even worse--- although I could see that happening. They turned him into the primary antagonist for the movie, which naturally, didn't drive it very far. The rest of it, from the princesses ( which I thought, if tweaked, could have have more useful and interesting) to the trio ( Ling especially.. ugh.) including the ending was just forced.

What happened to the drama? The sophistication?

Potential wasted.

I know how you feel the first movie was soooo good and the second one was just....not worth it.
