Danny Boyle shares details on "Trainspotting 2"
By KEN LOMBARDI / CBS NEWS/ April 3, 2013, 5:35 PM

Oscar-winner Danny Boyle has been highly regarded for his directing work with films like "Slumdog Millionaire" and "127 Hours," but he may owe it all to his 1996 breakout hit, "Trainspotting."

The drug-fueled dark comedy starred Ewan McGregor as a young Scottish hooligan who gets addicted to heroin with his friends. It became a sleeper hit and helped launch Boyle, as well as McGregor, to stardom.

"Trainspotting" was loosely based off of a novel by Irvine Welsh, who penned a follow-up book called "Porno" in 2002.

At the New York premiere Tuesday night of his latest psychological thriller, "Trance," Boyle spoke with CBSNews.com about his plans to make a "Trainspotting" sequel and revealed to us that it won't be a strict adaptation of Welsh's "Porno."

"No, the original movie wasn't really based...it was inspired by the book 'Trainspotting.' And I think this [sequel] will be inspired by Irvine Welsh's book again. But not a direct adaptation. No."

Boyle also spoke to us about his intentions for the characters in the sequel. Watch video above to see what he has to say.

"Trance," opens in theaters on Friday.
There's a video of Danny talking about it here: Danny Boyle shares details on "Trainspotting 2" - CBS News

He also said this:

Quote:
"Do you expect to bring back the original actors?" he asks, and without hesitation, Boyle answered "That's the idea, yeah. I mean we haven't approached any of them yet, and we wouldn't approach them until we get the script right..."

Boyle states he doesn't plan on a different version of "Trainspotting" but to bring back the characters as they would be 20 years later.

"Maybe they're in the same town, maybe they're not...but [to show] what has happened to them....Have they loved, have they lost, what have they done with their lives...[are they] still bound together as they clearly were in the first film..." quotes Boyle.

Why do I get the feeling Porno is going to be really depressing?

TS was a great adaptation of a novel that didn't have a streamlined plot. So I hope they can turn Porno into a good film.

How could it not be?

Sounds like they aren't going to stick to the book at all.

I don't remember being depressed by the book, though.

But that's a little disappointing because why call it Porno at all?

Dark comedy, yeah?

I guess they want to make the TS sequel and they'll base it loosely on Porno. It's just not going to be a close adaptation.

Yea, I guess it would be a dark comedy. If the movie is going to be very different I may not even bother to read the book again.

Sick Boy's girlfriend was my favorite character in Porno, so as long as she's included in the movie, I'm good.

^What actress do you think would be right for that role?

Angelina Jolie?

No, not Angelina. The girl is college/university aged. When I was reading the book I pictured Emilie de Ravin. She may be too old now. That would be hysterical if she was casted as Sick Boy's g/f since she is playing Robert Carlyle's g/f elsewhere.

So it's Sick Boy's turn to rob the cradle? I can't think of a college-aged actress I'd want to see play opposite JLM.

^JLaw isn't right for the role? I feel like she could pull anything off.

I just....no. I can't even explain it, but I do not want an American playing the part.

Ooh, Sarah Bolger is college aged. She can be the girlfriend.

Oh, I see. That makes perfect sense.

Love her. I second this motion!

Although, the thought of her and JLM together is ooky.

Yea, JLM is like 20 years older than her or something, and it will look like he's taking advantage of a h.s. girl. But thinking about it last night, Diane is supposed to be college aged because she and Sick Boy's girlfriend are roommates, and there's no way Kelly MacDonald can pass as college aged. So they'll probably end up changing/deleting the story. I just hope they don't delete the character because I really liked Sick Boy's girlfriend.
