Hello, I was way too tired over the weekend to post on all of the LOTR threads I wanted to post on. I'm new to the LOTR board, mostly because I hadn't finished reading the books until last week, so I wanted to avoid spoilers.

Eowyn is such an amazing inspiration. I can't believe some people criticized Tolkien for his portrayal of women when there was Eowyn (and Galadriel too). I've read quite a few of the classic science fiction and fantasy books (by men) and I think Tolkien was one of the best at portraying women characters who weren't total doormats or damsels in distress.

I can't quite describe the feeling I had in the theatre when Eowyn killed the Witch-King. I was so proud of her! I was disappointed that the Houses of Healing part was removed, so I can't wait for the EE.

I totally agree. I was so glad she pretended to be a man so she could go into battle. I'll admit I was spoiled for the Eowyn slays the Witch-King part of the books by something I read in an LOTR discussion (I think it started as a complaint about the lack of strong female characters in LOTR), but I kept wondering how the heck she was able to get close to him. And I didn't even figure out for a while that Dernhelm was really Eowyn (in the book, obviously). [img]smilies/lol.gif[/img]

This is sort of off topic, but the Eowyn and the Witch-King scene reminded me a lot of a scene in the book The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley. Anyone else here read it? I wouldn't say McKinley was ripping off Tolkien, but it's obvious to me that LOTR was a big inspiration for her. My favorite fantasy (and science fiction) stories (books, TV, or movies) all have kick-butt women characters in them.
