I like the fact that Gollum had some meme worthy, but funny scenes at times too... mainly thanks to Andy, and his performance really...

Andy was amazing, he really put everything into making the character come to life. It really wouldn't have worked without his input I think. I love how no one really valued him at first because it was a cg character, but over time, he became even the inspiration for how Gollum even looked on screen.

What made his performance standout is the fact that he has managed to make Gollum into a living character, with displaying a variety of emotions throughout the 2 movies...

... In a way he was able to capture the character's essence, as it was imagined by Tolkien really... and that's why that Gollum is anything but just a cgi-character

Yes, and really it was so important that Gollum felt like any other character. That he was real and believable in every sense.

Gollum is still not my favourite character, but Andy portrayed the character masterfully...

Well both halves of him aren't very likeable. But Smeagol had to be able to cause Frodo to pity him, that quality had to be believable.

I always found Gollum/Smeagol more likable in the 2nd book until they run into Faramir... he acted more of the 3rd hobbit on adventure, and in the books even shared stories of what he recalls from his youth...

... and some of that likableness is what Andy has managed to capturw!
