They're just following the comics

. If Lois and Clark come back to Supergirl, they had better have a little boy named Jon with them

(the "science" of it all is simple: Clark had to be somewhere his powers weren't active in order to get Lois pregnant. On SG it was on Argo for a few weeks; In the comics, Earth was trapped under a dome that blocked out the sun for an extended period of time).
