"losing any friend is horrific, but he just has this t h i n g
about him – this special, e n i g m a t i c thing that
I have never met in anyone before."

Working with Heath was one of the purest joys of my life.
He brought to the role of Ennis more than any of us could
have imagined - a thirst for life, for love, and for truth,
and a vulnerability that made everyone who knew him love
him. His death is heartbreaking.

Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee

I adored him. I don't know how to compare his
talent to others but he's touched me deeply as a talent
and it's a great loss - losing him at any age would be a l
oss but it was pretty rough news. I was really shocked by it.

John Travolta

I had such great hope for him. He was just taking off
and to lose his life at such a young age is a tragic loss.
My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Mel Gibson

I am shocked and very saddened by the news. I deeply
respected Heath's work and always admired his continuing
development as an artist. My thoughts are with his family
and close friends.

Cate Blanchett

I think Tennyson got it right in the poem when he described
someone as having died at a young age but burning the
candles at both ends, and oh what a beautiful flame he
made, that was Heath, what a beautiful flame he made
and a great talent.

I worked on the same film and I never met him - we were
never on the same set. This is as much news to me as
anybody and it affects me in the same way.

Morgan Freeman, co-star in Dark Knight

“I hadn’t really been that familiar with his work,” Naomi recalls.
“Then, when I got to the set and did that first scene with him, I
was like, ‘Wow! This guy is alive.’ It was just something deep in
his eyes. You could look into them, and they would tell a
thousand stories in one glance. There was a wonderful
mixture of power and fragility at work in everything he did, which
just pulls you in. His strength didn’t scare you. It intrigued you.
And his fragility touched you.” The couple parted amicably in
2004, separated by the distance of two growing careers,
but stayed friends until Heath’s tragic death from an
accidental overdose in early 2008. “It’s still incredibly difficult,”
Naomi says, her voice trailing off.

'Heath goes through it three times and that was it, we had the
solution.I was calling people who knew and loved Heath and everyone
on the cast and crew was determined that this film was finished.
People's love for Heath propelled this film forward', Gilliam explained.

"When I got the call, it was a double tug," Law says of joining
the cast of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. "I liked Heath
very much as a man and admired him as an actor. To help
finish his final piece of work was a tribute I felt compelled
to make."
- Jude Law

"To help Terry finish his film was an honor paid to a man I
adore," Law says. "Though we were all there in remembrance,
Heath's heart pushed us with great lightness to the finish."

"Heath was just brilliant at it, and he got everybody else
going," Terry Gilliam said Friday at the Cannes Film Festival,
where the movie premiered this week. "Everybody was just
energized by Heath. He was extraordinary. He was almost
exhausting because he had so much energy."

I can't hide the fact that I would really love for that honor
to be bestowed upon him," Jackman, speaking to he
Associated Press, said of his fellow Australian, who died
from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs on
Jan. 22, 2008. "It would be fitting and I think he deserves it."

"Heath was magnetic. He was loved by everybody on the
set. It's not all the time that the crews are interested in
what's going on, but Heath was electric—we all watched him.
It was amazing to see. People were in awe of Heath."

—Ledger's The Dark Knight costar Aaron Eckhart

"It's satisfying to see people celebrating the incredible
talent of Heath," Bale said of Ledger's performance as
the villainous Joker. "I just want him to be recognized."

When Ledger’s name appeared on the screen in the
closing credits, followed by the message "In memory of
our friends Heath Ledger and Conway Wickliffe,” the star-studded
crowd erupted in cheers and applause

"I want to talk about Heath," Bale told this Sunday's
issue of PARADE. "When you miss somebody, you want
to speak about him. He was a good man, and I was
glad to have spent time with him."

It was an honor to work with him, and I think that
he'll always be in people's thoughts," Ledger's Brokeback
Mountain costar Kate Mara, who played his older daughter,
told PEOPLE at a Beverly Hills event for the Kenneth Cole
Awareness Fund. "I think he affected people that he'd
never met before."

"I have only good memories of him," she added.
"Losing any friend is horrific, but he just has this thing
about him – this special, enigmatic thing that I have
never met in anyone before. That's what all of his
friends are saying. They are totally devastated by l
osing someone who gave them so much. He gave
everyone so much."

"It seems somehow strange to be talking about anything else.
Not that there's anything to say really except to express one's
regret and to say from the bottom of one's heart to his family
and to his friends that I'm sorry for their trouble. I didn't
know him, I have a strong impression I would have liked
him very much."
- Daniel Day Lewis

"I remember one time I was having a business meeting with
an elderly event planner of the gay persuasion... Ledger passed
by us in the lobby and with all the confidence that only someone
truly comfortable with their sexuality could muster, he winked at
the event planner, who just about fainted. Needless to say,
I snagged the very lucrative event, thanks to Ledger's
flirtatiousness...To this day, I appreciated the effort he made."
