I thought the villain needed a bit more backstory in Beyond, but there was great character development for the crew.

As everybody might be aware, I grew up watchnig Kirk, Spock& Bones in the first six movies, so they remain my favorites.
Beyond brought some of that back for me. |

I don't know the full details, but I believe he was brought in when the original writing of Beyond fell into difficulties.
