Those were all terrific episodes. Can't say "The High Ground" sticks in my mind though.

TFTNT, Chris

"The High Ground" wasn't on-par with the other episodes I mentioned, but I love it because it is Beverly-centric and has good P/C moments

Re the banner, I'd hardly call Crusher or Troi indomitable, tough or strong. I hate when people call just any old female character strong when they're not strong. It's like they don't expect strength from women, so they lower their standards and call non-strong women strong. Which is an insult to women, because women can be as strong as men and should be judged by the same standard. Save the term strong for female characters who actually are strong, not just any old female character who can put one foot in front of another and doesn't faint or scream all the time. If you want to make a TNG strong women banner put Tasha, Kaylar and Ro Laren on it. Those three were strong. Troi was a wet rag and Crusher had very little personality of any sort.

No, it's not an insult to women. I made the banner, and since I see both Troi and Crusher as strong women, I included them in my banner.

To call them strong you have to lower your standards for strength. Which is where insulting women comes into it.

No, I don't.

Don't know if I posted this banner before, but since it's the TNG thread:

It's a behind-the-scenes picture from the 1st season

In your opinion. The artist, Becky, sees them differently, and is entitled to her opinion.

Personally, I always thought Crusher showed strength of character. We didn't really get to know Tasha very well, but she seemed effective as head of security. I was never a huge fan of Troi, but I wouldn't call her a "wet rag" either.

Crusher and Troi are very far from being strong characters. They weren't especially good characters either. What we've got in that banner is TNG's worst two regular characters plus a character who was good but wasn't on for even a full season. Surely a TNG thread banner should have the best characters, Picard and Data (along with whoever else you want to have in it). And if it's to be a female-only banner then what about Pulaski, who was much more a strong character than either Troi or Crusher. I don't like the way she's sidelined. She was a welcome relief from the cold bland dullness of Crusher. As it is, the non-regular female characters on TNG stand out far more than the regulars. Pulaski wasn't officially a regular and there's Kaylar, Ro and Vash for example.

And I think seeing Crusher and Troi as strong is part of the problem I mentioned.

Again, that's your opinion. An artist's usage and placement of characters is their personal choice, and they're entitled to do as they wish. I'm thankful that Becky chose to share her art with us, and was gracious enough to allow it to be used in the opening post.

If you'd like to make a banner to contribute, you're more than welcome to do so.

Thanks, Tracey

We should put a picture/banner of the full TNG cast in the OP. Any ideas which one?

Of course it's my opinion. I wouldn't be saying it if it wasn't. But it doesn't make it any less right. When a banner is at the top of a thread it should represent the topic of the thread. As such, a picture of all the regulars would be the standard appropriate thing. A picture of the two worst characters and a character who was only in one season, with implications of applying different (condescending) standards to women than to men, hardly cuts it. We don't need a banner at all but if we have one it should be an appropriate banner and one without negative implications. An "artist" may be entitled to do as they wish in their own work but whether that work is appropriate as the heading banner for a particular thread is another question.

I agree. And don't forget Pulaski.

I'll leave off the banner topic now.

I found the original picture from the banner I posted of Jonathan, Marina, and Gates. There are other on-the-set pictures, too.

The Early Years - On Set - Page 1

I can't believe it's been nearly 23 years since it first aired. Wow.
