Question, do you have to watch Discovery to understand this show? Or can you just go ahead and watch this show whenever? I was gonna check it out since it has a couple actors I like

You can definitely watch this show on it's own. There are several references to events from The Original Series, but those generally come with a brief explanation if it's important. Pike, Spock and Number One did spend some time on Discovery, but there hasn't been much mentioned about that.

^ yeah agree with that, but one can watch discovery season 2 in order to see more of the characters.

that's a good suggestion. Go back and watch some Discovery if you want a bit more background on the characters.
