Star Trek 2017 Television Series ~ Discovery - may contain spoilers

Seems like a good time to start a thread to compile news about the new series.

Quote:
CBS has booked studio space in Toronto. Star Trek will start filming this fall after Fuller finishes up with American Gods, and the premiere will air on CBS but the show itself will air in 2017 on CBS’s All-Access streaming service. While there has been no official announcement about the cast, there has also been no confirmation that the show will feature the USS Enterprise, but there is a sense that it will take place between the Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Pinewood Toronto Studios: Brand New Home Of Star Trek | Airlock Alpha

The studio that was the home of “RoboCop,” “Suicide Squad” and even “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” will now have a new permanent tenant.

Pinewood Toronto Studios, a massive studio of more than 250,000 square feet, will be the new home of the upcoming Star Trek television series, The Hollywood Reporter says.
Casting so far:

Doug Jones - Lt. Saru

Sonequa Martin-Green - Lt. Cmdr Rainsford

Anthony Rapp - Lt. Stamets

Michelle Yeoh - Captain Georgiou

Mary Chieffo - L'Rell

Shazad Latif - Kol

Chris Obi - T'Kuvma

James Frain - Sarek

I hope it is between the generations and has nothing to do with JJ's franchise.

Agree that it makes more sense to relate it to the established television series in some way, but they'll do what they want.

Yes they will. Like having all future episodes beyond the pilot airing on CBS streaming instead of conventional television.

I probably won't be able to watch unless a Canadian network picks it up.

I am in the same boat. Beyond the first episode anyways. They will at the very least air that on CBS TV. I dont know yet if I will actually want to invest my time and energy into it until I learn more about the characters and timeline involved 100%

If I know that I won't be able to watch it, I may not bother with the pilot. Although curiosity will likely win the day.

It takes a lot to get me into a weekly series these days. I failed with Supergirl and Gotham. So if Im going to watch something, Id like to know a little information.

A little general information is good, such as genre, general plot synopsis (main points only) and sometimes who is in it, but I do not want to know more than that before watching a new show. Ignorance makes a show more entertaining if it is good.

I hope not. Ships called Enterprise were done to death by the end of TNG. Then that was followed up by the idiotic show Enterprise. The powers-that-be need to realise that a ship called Enterprise is not the centre of Star Trek. The shows are about the crews and their adventures, situations and travails. Please. For Heaven's sake, not another Enterprise!

CBS's New 'Star Trek' Could Be the Network's Answer to Netflix and Hulu - The Atlantic
Quote:
On Tuesday, CBS detailed its plans for its prospective Netflix competitor “CBS All Access,” a monthly subscription-based online service that will use a new Star Trek show to try and reel in viewers. ......

According to a conference call held with reporters by CBS’s president, Les Moonves, the new Star Trek series will debut in January 2017, with one episode released per week. It’s not much different from how CBS airs its programs now, except that “All Access” will cost an extra $6 a month. The news that Star Trek was returning to TV excited devoted fans of the franchise, but online chatter mostly focused on how quickly they’d be able to watch the season before unsubscribing from the service. The fan site TrekCore acknowledges, sadly, that such a “binge and bail” tactic won’t be possible—which is exactly what CBS wants.
