That's true to a point, but I think that they quickly discovered that they could like and respect each other.

They showed each other the due deference they deserved. She the Captain. He the First Officer. Chakotay knew he could talk to Kathryn and she would listen, and if she was mad, she would have to take time to calm down, and then understand what he was trying to tell her.

They definitely were made for each other! They had a common professional goal. They had similar personal appreciations. There was also that immediate attraction between them. Every ounce of feeling they had, they used it to forge an unbreakable bond (it was tested at times but it never broke). They always came back to each other, even though it became strained in later years.
