Mr John Bates comes to Downton Abbey, an old friend of the resident Lord Crawley. His presence is not welcomed by all in the household - upstairs by the family, or downstairs by the staff. Mr Bates lives with an injured leg and everyone presumes he will be unable to fulfull his duties as a Valet. Everyone... except Anna.

Anna Smith is the head housemaid for the aristocratic Crawley's when she meets Mr Bates. There is an instant compassion for the injured newcomer, leading to a tentative friendship. Compassion turns to admiration. Admiration to love. Anna falls in love with John's courage, his quiet kindness and his tenacity in the face of adversity.

But despite their mutual regard, shy smiles, longing looks and whispered conversations, their blossoming love is threatened by secrets from his past...

What's everyone's fave Bates/Anna scene(s)? Any reasons in particular you were drawn into their story? Any speculation on where you think/hope their SL is going?

I think my fave Mr. Bates/Anna scene, apart from the obvious kiss *le swoon*, is them sitting at the table afterwards; John is discussing their future together and he gets a little shy when mentioning them starting a family so Anna finishes the sentence for him - I swear, I melted a million times! :love: What a perfect future for them! I HAVE to see a Mr. & Mrs. John and Anna Bates wedding on Downton and there HAS to little Bateses running around their hotel.

I also saw the link on Tumblr and was here like a shot, so please add me. I also realised I have been on this site since 2008 -when I was shipping Jack and Sam from Without a Trace (okay, I still write J/S fanfic and worship Anthony LaPaglia). But this is my new ship. I'm a fan of older/younger pairings and A/B suits me just fine; it has also led me to greater appreciation of that fine example of maleness, Brendan Coyle.

So many lovely scenes between these two I find it hard to pick one -anything they're in together just makes me go all *sigh*.

Oh yes, Brendan Coyle embodies masculinity - I love his broad shoulders and how tall he his in general, but especially compared to Anna/Joanne :sigh: I remember him in the TV comedy Paths to Freedom here in Ireland when I was about 13 or so and totally crushed on him then; he was thin and younger, and wore glasses in the show, but methinks I might prefer him now! And his voice... :in_love:

THIS SO MUCH! I have like a TON of favourite scenes. I think when she brings him supper and see's him crying :bawl: I wanted to just hug him and kiss him and slap O'Brian and make Mr Bates feel better :bawl:

Love the moment when he says to Anna "alone at last" and you see the nervous look on her face :blush: All i saw was RAINBOWS! :lol:

The entire first episode of series 2 was WIN for them :love: "And you might start calling me John" I NEED MY SMELLING SALTS!! *swoon swoon swoon*

Yes yes yes! I loved him since seeing him in North and South and then in Lark Rise. I keep reading reviews from critics and blogs by fans and there seems to be one universal consensus. DA has made a sex symbol of Brendan. I think its hilariously wonderful! I think Brendan is just as surprised. He took the role of the strong, quiet valet and ended up as the man half the world is swooning over. Its fantastic! :love:
