It's hard to say that it was an excuse, because I do think to the writers at the time, that was how it was. It's like how Giles explained it to Xander in 1x02, the vampire & the soul/person are completely different. Obviously they changed their minds later down the line & that screwed all the mythology up a little bit, so it's hard to hold s1 Angel to the standards that weren't established till later on the show
I do think he was meant to be more morally ambigious in seasons 1 & 2 than most people think though, seeing as how he was originally meant to die, I think his whole relationship with Buffy was meant to be interpreted as much darker than it was. Then when they brought him back in s3, they romanticized it a lot & Angel did get a little saintly. & yeah, Angel would have never found another Darla - I bet he would have tried to find women like her though. Small blondes.... __________________

Well according to Tim Minear, that's how he explained Buffy/Angel relationship. Angel trying to find a Darla replacement... and I seriously never knew that until of course I heard one of his recent interviews I post it. lol
So of course now I see the episodes he was involved with very differently now. Yeah they completely screwed the mythology. And I agree with the other stuff you said. |

I do too, obviously it wasn't all quite planned out that way, but it all definitely fits that narrative.
Especially if you start to think of Darla & Buffy both representing the two sides of his life. It's like if he's with Buffy, he can hide from what he was better, he thinks that's his way of being a champion, by being the saint Angel that she sees him as. With Darla, he has to face the darkness in him too, which he just can't handle __________________

Wow you are completely correct. I think with Buffy, she didn't have him really face the darkness of his life and he can sort of... for a little while forget his darkness. She was sort of the light. I mean even when he was at his darkest point, he saw her and he had home to want to do and be better.
With Darla, he HAD to face how evil he use to be. Because him and Darla did a lot of that evil together. Of course Angelus was always the side he wanted to erase and forget about to be a better soulful vampire but when Darla was around, it was the most when the lines got blurred a bit. |

Thank you
It only really hit me the other day - I guess from all these conversations we've been having - but it all makes sense to me, even though I doubt that was the writers' intentions __________________

^ Well probably not, but it was Tim Minera intention. Since he said the difference with Darla and Buffy is that Darla reminds him of that side of himself he is trying to forget about. He said something similar to that. |

Darla was so special, both with and without the influence of a soul
