Romeo and Juliet- A Tragic Love
Wow, I cant believe there is no thread for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
Unless there already is, and I am making an idiot of myself by opening this We were forced to study the play last year in English and I found I really enjoyed the story (and watching the movies ofcourse) and though it did take me awhile to understand the language I feel inlove with the couple. We watched the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet and the latest version which stared Leo and Claire. I enjoyed both but found the characters more compelling in the 1968 version. I would love to hear what everyone else has to say about this couple. Pictures: 1968 Version: 1996 Version: __________________

I just love this story!
I was already hooked onto it before the newest movie came out ... I've always been a sucker for the tragic love. Trude |

This is one of my favourite stories of all time. I've lost count on the times I've read it, and it's simply excellent.
Movie wise I adore the '68 version, Olivia Hussey is an awesome actress. Can't say I was all that pleased with the newer version though, unfortunately. __________________

I loved both version.
Romeo and Juliet is one of my favourite plays by Shakespeare. Too bad every time I see Olivia Hussey I think 'Stephen King's It' __________________

I think the characters seemed more inlove in the 1968 version. Possibly because the actors were better, I dont know. Possibly something was lost from the classic love in the modernisation process.
I think the whole idea of being so much inlove you dont want to live on without the other person, is what attracts people to this couple. As morbid as it may seem StellaSlight- I'll make sure I never watch 'It' I hate scary movies anyway. __________________

You know, know that I think about it, I am quite surprised that there isn't a thread for R&J already. This really was a wonderful play - I try to make it a habit to read it at least once a year (along with a few other books).
Personally, I liked both movies - you can't go wrong when you're following Shakespere both in script and in costume. And well, I thought that Claire and Leo had unbelievable chemistry. That and I'm a sucker for Baz films. Quote:
Oh my, she was in the movie, wasn't she? I totally forgot. And Chilli, the movie really wasn't that scary. It definitely did no justice to the book. (Of course, how can you do a 1000+ page book justice with a crummy three-hour TV movie?) __________________

I have been a fan of Romeo & Juliet ever since I saw the '96 version. I know it's kind of a more mature version than what Shakespeare had hoped for, but the director did an amazing job and that is now one of my favorite movies. Plus, Leo was adorable back then.
