Elena's reaction to that kiss is priceless. That kiss came off like a test, he was watching her response to everything. I like how he didn't judge her for shutting off her emotions, instead he was genuinely upset to hear that Jeremy was dead. He offered his sympathies and expressed hope that she could come back from it all one day. I loved his little smile when she quotes his letter back to him and the way his face fell when she said she burned it.

(Does anyone else feel like we're missing a piece, though? Something felt very off about this episode. Something about Elijah's reactions to some things make me wonder...)

I also had to laugh at Katherine overestimating Elijah's reaction to realizing Elena was impersonating her. "Rip her heart out"? Not even close.

We've always said they're so much alike. They tell themselves that things are true that aren't, they always want to believe, they always give second chances, they always get burned.

I liked it, at first she was shocked but then she just melted right into the kiss. He was upset, he didn't like her emotions being turned off but off course he didn't judge her. Not his memo. He was so happy that Elena remembered the letter, that was my favorite moment between them in that episode. Just how he was leaning against the wall, proud about reminiscing with her about the letter.

I think that showed how little did Katherine know about the bond Elena & Elijah had shared. I love how honest they were with each other, the truth hurts but they tell each other it. Yes they are all about second chances with each other.

I love how he was able to guess fairly quickly that she had shut off her emotions. He knew immediately that something else had happened; even though it's just been one horrible thing in Elena's life after another she's always been able to push through it. For her to shut her emotions off he knew there had to have been something huge. His face when she told him that Jeremy was dead was so stunned. Once he had the whole story everything just clicked into place and so he didn't tell her "this isn't you" or "fight this" or anything else, he basically acknowledged that this is something she's going to have to go through until she's ready to accept her emotions again. He's getting better and better at reading her and understanding her.

What a sad little mirror Elena held up for Elijah; showing him what he was doing, making him listen to himself. Like you said, they were very honest with each other and it made me so happy to see Elena explain Elijah's bull***** to him. What an awkward and hurtful conversation for both of them. I kind of liked that they had Elijah so convinced he could 'save' Katherine and just start over like the last 500 years didn't happen. Like the girl he met in England and the girl who the Salvatores met in the 19th century are two separate people. (How hilarious and sad it must've seemed to Elena to realize Elijah was doing to Katherine the exact same thing the Salvatores have been doing to her. Killing people changes you. Neither of them are angels.) I would be interested in knowing if he tracked Katherine down after he left MF after giving Elena the letter or if it was after the events of the s3 finale.

He was practically preening against that wall That was my favorite moment as well; they gave each other those little smiles that they've shared before, right before Elena said she burned the letter. Sucker punch.

I am sure that we will never hear about this - at least not on TVD. Maybe they'll pick up a few loose ends in the Originals (if that pilot is gonna make it to a whole series) but I wouldn't bet on it. They always tend to drop some interesting storylines – that's how this show rolls, unfortunately.

I felt sad for Elijah that he had been played by Kat, and I am not sure if he has forgiven her at all when she handed over the cure at the end of the episode. I hope not!

I suppose there's still the chance that she was being honest but it does seem awfully convenient that she hooked up with the guy who has the best chance of negotiating her release. A man she's seen, what, twice since England? (When he left her in the tomb and then when she watched Klaus dagger him, IIRC.) And she told Elena, when she was in the tomb, that she had fallen for Klaus in England. But now....Elijah? Very convenient. Of course, perhaps she's just cursed to never be believed. I don't know if Elijah believes her, either, and we pretty much know they won't be involved on the spinoff since Nina will be doing the fifth season of TVD and isn't signed on for the spinoff. So either Elijah doesn't believe her, she's really playing him, or the wild card option: he's been playing her too. With TVD if it looks to good to be true it probably is. Who knows? Obviously not me.

I loved that Elijah was crouched over Elena's body, watching her. He knows she's a vampire and would come back, it's not like Katherine ripped her heart out, but he was still concerned. Daniel Gillies played that scene so well

Three years in a row we're approaching the season finale and every time I have been wishing it was about them. I wish they had more screen time it is always refreshing their dynamics and the huge amount of respect they have for each other. They're equals.

Ha, yeah, you're right. I hadn't noticed that I wonder why the writers always give us a lot of Elejah material toward the end of a season? Their dynamic is electric It's the best thing about the show for me.

The respect they have for each other is an interesting thing. It's head and heels above the respect other characters have for each other, imo. The things they've forgiven, the truths they've spoken to each other, their ability to read and understand each other almost always; the guilt when they have to choose other people over each other. Maybe I'm just really really biased but I don't think Elijah respects anyone the way he respects Elena.

They really are equals It's no wonder Nina wants Elena with Elijah, Elena really thrives around him. She's bolder with Elijah.
