(We have this special birthday saying in Hungarian, I have really no idea what it means, but we say: Happy Birthday, may your ears reach your ankles. Kind of appropriate now )

So here is an explanation by a friend of mine: the ears are organs which are growing continously during a lifetime, so if someone's ears are reaching their ankles, it means that someone is really really old.
