20 years of love, drama and amazing stories

Little did I know how my life would change when I finally watched a show named Queer as Folk 2013. And I was mad at me that it took me so long to start bingewatching. I think I watched it at least 3 times in a row, before I started searching the internet for more information on stories and actors. that's how I found that beautiful board and I lurked for at least 6 months before I dared to sign up and post. I found new friends all over the world and this place here became my online family. Still didn't I know that I would be moderator here one day, and each day I come here, it is like coming home. This series brought a lot of love in my life. It showed me that there is acceptance in the world and that people are willing to take you the way you are, even dare to meet with completly strangers and that there still is good in the world. Thanks for 20 years of that amazing show.

Wow... Queer As Folk turned 20 today. That's it. That's the post.

It's been almost 10 years since I've discovered the show. QAF still means the world to me, and it's left such a profound impact on us all. We're better because this show exists. Also, so many emotions have been encapsulated through these characters.

Queer As Folk was so well-written that it offered up glimpses into the lives of all the characters through their struggles and triumphs. Characters who were so gloriously human; they also happened to be gay and human, and I loved them all the more for it. Queer As Folk is truly special. It certainly stood up for its time. Yet somehow, it's still so far ahead of its time, given how many of the story lines reflecting the times they were written for are still relevant to this day. Namely in the matters of human rights, equality, and the quest for long-standing tolerance. I'm not sure what that says about the progress of humanity, but I digress. Needless to say, incorporating 'queer' into the title was clever because 'queer' is a word that best describes humanity as a whole. Truly the strangest, most complex, most mysterious, most fickle creatures to inherit this world.

The quality of the show provided by the writing, the direction, cinematography, and the actors' portrayal of their respective roles have all culminated in my unwavering appreciation. Queer As Folk always had unique ways of making us feel. I always found it impressive how a single fast-panning shot could convey so much emotion. The camera work paired with the music, for me, is what stirred up so many pleasant (and sometimes not-so-pleasant) emotions. These shots were equally jarring as they were emotive in setting up the perfect atmosphere for what would happen. Which made for a more intense viewing experience. The personification of these fast shots is one of the most unique (and very much on brand for early 2000s television) aspects of QAF, especially for seasons one and two. This effect seemed to match the cinematic element of retro-futurism of that time period. Looking back on those times now, that's what I found most endearing about that era of television.
Story-telling is what kept me thoroughly invested in every aspect of theses characters' lives. I'm sure it's done the same for countless viewers. Whether it was the ongoing journey of self discovery, searching for that sense of belonging, or coming to terms with who they wanted to be, it all resonated deeply within me as well. Not often do I get attached to fictional characters, but here I was adopting this group of seven friends into my head as if they were my own friends. Each time I'd get wrapped up in a new story line, I would get so invested in all that these characters would go through. I'd laugh, cry, and cheer them on as if they were real. To an extent, they are real, given that they personify very real concepts that exists within the mind; much like any GREAT work of art. Not too many shows have that impact on me, truthfully.

What's more, Queer As Folk dealt with universal themes of love, acceptance, tolerance, and the will to go on in the face of adversity. Only the characters were gay, which widened my scope of understanding even more pertaining to issues members of the LGBTQ community face, and continue to face.

This show will always have my heart. ♥️

I cannot believe this show is 20 years! That's so awesome. What a great show. I'm sure it helped a lot of people understand themselves and others more.
