That's why fans got frustrated, there was never really any reason given SV often used to write him as the bad guy in other characters eyes because of the comics, without really thinking through how characters should be reacting in him in Smallville. With Jonathan as well, Lex kept working to improve himself in Jonathan's eyes and there were episodes where you'd think they had ended it on better terms (Phoenix, Prodigal, Reaper, ), but then he would go right to distrusting Lex with no change just because he was ~Lex Luthor~

I think the case is a bit different with Jonathan, though. I can imagine that as a parent you're very critical about the friends your son/daughter hangs out with. Jonathan disliked Lionel so much that he just never could ignore the fact that Lex was Lionel's son, no matter how many times Lex proved himself trustworthy. So at least, with Jonathan it makes some sense. Chloe on the other hand...

To be fair I can understand Jonathan finding it weird that Lex wanted to be friends with Clark when Clark was so much younger It's easy to forget because of Tom Welling, but Clark was only like 14/15 in the first two seasons

Exactly. And his obsession with Clark's love life was kind of weird as well.

I think that Lex idealised Clark's purity and innocence so much because it was the opposite of what he had always been surrounded by at home

While of course there's their scene which started off the "verbal judo" their scene in rush where Chloe says "You're the cunning linguist, translate this: Kiss. My. Ass." I enjoyed their scene in Arrival "I came to take you home"

I like the scenes you chose because they stand for both sides of their relationship. One the one side they enjoyed their little "verbal judo", like you called it, but on the other side, if things got really they didn't need many words to know how to help each other.
