Smallville 7x04 "Cure" Episode Discussion

Hi and welcome to the "Cure" episode discussion thread: Here is the official CW episode summary. The episode airs on Thursday, October 18, 2007

Lois and Clark's superman DEAN CAIN guest stars — Chloe (Allison Mack) learns that a doctor, Dr. Curtis Knox (Dean Cain), has been treating meteor-infected people and removing their abilities. Desperate to get rid of her powers, Chloe makes an appointment to see him, unaware that Dr. Knox has a nefarious plan to kill his patients and harvest their organs. Meanwhile, Kara (Laura Vandervoort) cons Jimmy (Aaron Ashmore) into helping her locate her crystal and defies Clark’s (Tom Welling) order to stay on the farm after she discovers its whereabouts.
Lana (Kristin Kreuk) sets up secret surveillance of Lex (Michael Rosenbaum). Erica Durance and John Glover also star.

Directed by: Rick Rosenthal

Written by: Al Septien & Turi Meyer

I want to add that I am extra excited about this episode, Dean and the return of MB

Me too! I have been a fan of Dean's since Lois and Clark! He's been on several shows like Las Vegas and some TV movies. I used to think he was really hot until Tom came to TV. Sorry Dean! Tom wins, hands down!

Well being better than last week won't be very hard, let's hope for an excellent episode instead

Cris, you are like an investigative reporter, knowing what Canadiens think now?

Why is Canada getting to see the show one day earlier now?
I'm not sure yet what I thought about it. Dean was great. I sure feel sorry for Chloe. Now she really knows how Clark used to feel with Lana. Speaking of Lana, she sure has changed! What was that room? She sure seems to have an agenda.

They changed the day it airs for some reason.

They also get Pushing Daisies a day earlier, and same thing with Heroes for a while last year too. I guess they can't always synchronize the programming in US and Canada?

Curtis Knox?

That was Vandal Savage, wasn't it?

He likes to operate under alias names.

I want to say "thank you SV" for

1. Not screwing over Dean with a role that sucks and doesn't do him justice.
2. Actually advancing all of S7's arcs in one episode (see, it can be done!!!)
3. Making a really fun and enjoyable episode (with a few minor exceptions but come on, it's a TV show, not a feature film)

Wow, I have to kind of calm down, because this episode totally blew me away. It was way better than I anticipated it would be (maybe it helps to lower your expectations after...Fierce)

Quick Review of "Cure"

The Good:

Where do I start? This was one of the best episodes I have seen in a long time (that wasn't a sweeps, premiere or finale episode).
Dean Cain did an excellent job as Curtis Knox (Yes, the initals are anvils falling from the sky, but deal with it) He wasn't just your typical one dimentional "bad guy" or "vilan" to be used. They gave him a great backstory (immortality...Highlander flashbacks anyone?), and they gave him a great moral dilemma. If you had to, what would you do to save the one you love. It would have really helped the story if they had a scene between him and Sophia, where she was concious (like a flashback) to flesh out their relationship and his motives a bit more. He was a determined and desperate man to save the love of his life from certain death and he pulled it off. The scene with Lex was brilliant, esp. for the pure shock element when Lex actually shot him right in the body several times and blood came out (I had a WTF moment, as in, did they just kill of Dean in the first half hour!!!) and had no idea they were going to pull out the immortality card. (thank God he wasn't a meteor freak himself, as that would have ruined it). Maybe I was thinking he wore a bullet proof vest, but when I saw the blood gushing out, anyways, great job by the writers to keep us in suspence and watching.
Both of his scenes with Lex were terrific, and the old watch with the Latin engravement was a nice touch from the past.

This is where I want to take a moment and really compliment SV on their set designers and their prop maker department. Did you see how great Knox's office/lab equipment looked? I mean they have a week to prep for these things sometimes, so great job. I know it goes under the radar, as we are normally focused on acting performance or the way the episodes are written, or the music score/soundtrack. However those sets and the props were outstanding (including Lana's creepy spy center)

We have been waiting a long time for a Dean/Tom scene...as in since S1 when Christopher Reeve appeared on SV. We wanted all of our "superman" on the show. So finally we got it, and it didn't disappoint. It was a short scene filled with some good action but the emotion Dean showed, and the depth he gave his character was evident. Hopefully when they bring him back (yes, they will do that at some point) he gets a scene where there is more dialogue between himself and Tom Welling.

Martian Manhunter returns! He didn't have a whole lot to do in the episode, other than "taking care of Knox" at the end, and causing some distrust between Kara and Clark. Was it just me, or the sub theme "trust" coming back and it just won't go away.

It's nice that they are making Kara seem like she's got an evil agenda and can't be trusted, it makes for a better show and storylines rather than everything is OK and good between the "house of El". The special effects with Kara taking off, esp. flying away from the barn were awesome. SV has done a wonderful job on a limited budget with them.

Major plot advancement on the Kara & her lost crystal plot. We had Kara teaming up with Jimmy to find out the people that may have the crystal are US government agency. Kara makes Jimmy swear and make it their "secret".

Yes, no more secrets no more lies is back (Thank you Lana). But more on that topic in the "bad section of the review".

Laura continues to grow into her role, they are giving her good material to work with. I don't quite buy her attraction to Jimmy (Yes, Aaron is good looking, but come on, surely there are other guys out there for Kara). I did like the little morning encounter with Lana and the pancakes. Jimmy teaching her how to eat with chopsticks was cute, but like I said, I don't quite buy them together.

Lex was great in this episode. He didn't have much, but his scenes with Knox were very good. We find out more things Lex is involved with as far as "level 33.1" and his meteor freak projects. Continuity. We find out that Lex isn't "totally" evil yet, as he tries to stop Knox from a killing spree of ex-meteor freaks. Then we have a scene where Lex and Clark talk, after Clark saves him (yet again). Lex doesn't ask questions, but by now he's gotta really, really wonder.

It was nice to bring back Sasha from S1, she was one character you felt more compassionate about as a "loner" type freak of the week. I like the continuity Kind of didn't want her to get killed, I mean hasn't she suffered enough by now, but I get it, they wanted us to know Knox means business and is willing to kill to save his wife.

I'm saving the best for last...Allison Mack was terrific in the episode. I know some of the Chloe fans weren't really happy with the way she was being written so far, but after this one, you gotta agree that the creative team is handling it pretty good. I liked how "stressed out" she seemed to be in the beginning, with both Jimmy and Clark wanting her to "do things" for them and she just kind of had to "leave" and decide what she wants to do with her life.

The Chlark moment was incredibly powerful, however it was made by Tom Welling when he said "you wouldn't know me"...I loved Allison's facial expression there. It was heartbreaking indeed. I recently read a Q/A with Al Gough (today actually) and this was one of the questions:

Why did Season 5 end with the Chloe-Clark kiss in the "Daily Planet" if there were no plans to follow through? Gough: The world was ending, and Chloe didn't think she'd see him again. The fact is, she will always have feelings for Clark, even though she knows they will never be more than friends.

OK, even with all of that said, there is undeniably at least a very deep and affectionate friendship between Clark and Chloe and it was evident in that scene where Clark was ready to talk her out of it but she convinced him not to.

Then the scene near the end where Chimmy broke up Allison was terrific, and her eyes are so expressive, I mean you can see it was just heartbreaking for her to lose Jimmy and not tell him. That scene was so good, it had me yelling at my TV "Tell him, just do it, tell him"...but you know, it's TV. It's what they do. I know Jimmy may have a hard time if he found out Chloe had a power in result with being meteor infected, but I'm sure in the end, he'd still want to be with her. Plus he did the sweetest thing with the "box full of memories". Those are the kind of break-ups in real life that are "just stupid", obviously both people really don't want to break up, but they find reasons to do it anyways. However, in TV land, this is tailor made to build up one of our two emerging triangles.

We'll always have the Clark/Lana/Lex and now we will have the Chloe/Jimmy/Kara. It's inevitable, b/c it's SV and Al and Miles love to torture viewership with stuff like that, rather than focus on the mythology elements.

The Bad:

Lana and no more "secrets" no more lies. First, she is now divorced from Lex and "wanted nothing in a settlement" as she said last week, and now she lied to Clark about the 10 million dollars she took. Second, I wish this divorce would have been mentioned earlier, it just seemed way too easy. The writers missed an opportunity there.

Then you have Lana just living at Clark's house. OK, they aren't married, she just moves in, has no job. I remember a lot of backlash against Lois' character when she moved in with the Kents in S4...well, are we going to get the same treatment for Lana or are we going to give her a pass (because Al has an incredibly inappropriate crush on Kristin?) Really, what is Lana's job?
Clark lives off the income from the farm, Chloe and Lois are working at the DP, even Kara is serving hot coffee at the Talon? What is Lana doing? A foundation to help "victims"? Please, yeah, she's spying on Lex. That is her job...living off stolen money. Yes it is stolen. If she wanted to actually get her "rightful money", get a divorce, get a settlement the honest and fair way. I know they wanted a darker Lana this year, but this is just wrong. It does her character injustice. Why not have Lana actually go back to college and maybe start working as an intern a law firm or something, if she wants to go after Lex? Instead she's lying to Clark (after Clark told her everything, and I do mean everything about himself and his family/friends) and she's just going to spy on Lex as "her job". Alright then But hey, at least Kristin is incredibly beautiful to look at. Thanks SV, for again screwing up Lana's character on the show. You can't even do "bad Lana" right anymore!

The Ugly:

Nothing in this category as over all this was a very strong episode.

I would rate "Cure" 4 out of 5!

I look forward to seeing what everyone else thought of the show?

Alex

Yes Laura is coming into her role as Kare nicely but I did not like her coming onto Jimmy. She should be focusing on getting this crystal that she claims she needs and not on romantic entanglements. Its not like Jimmy can help her with this. And her missing her home planet and being home sick.

I can see her as Supergirl later on and hope there is a show in the works.

Evil Lana is interesting and makes sense. I mean how many times has Lana been exposed to evil not to have an effect on her? Not sure about her spying on Lex though.

Love Chloe but not sure why she felt that she had to break up with Jimmy.

When does Clark start working at the Daily Planet or will they writers give him another future career?
