Katherine Waterston Reads AN ORDINARY LIFE by Vira

We love this story. It is called "An Ordinary Life" but the young girl at the center of the story is extraordinary. She is considerate, dutiful, disciplined, a good reader, curious (not everyone picks the History of France for bedtime reading), she cares for her old parents and all the plants and the cat, she appreciates the value of a clean porch, she keeps busy, she gets a good night sleep, she was smart, brave, kind, and funny! And she managed all that while wrestling with the social challenge of being the only girl in her village. She is awesome. So is this story. Mary Oliver said: “To pay attention. This is our endless and proper work.” Vira has paid attention to the details of a day in a way that lets us see the commonplace as the beautiful routine of a beautifully ordinary life.

William Martin wrote:

“Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.”

@katherinewaterston wasn't the obvious choice for this great piece of writing. She is not ordinary. She a precision instrument who can do it all. She doesn't kick and scream to be noticed. But she could if she wanted to. I shouldn't say much about her because I am so biased. And everything she does speaks for itself. She just takes it all really seriously but too much, and does her job as well as she can but never forgets to laugh at it all. I love her. Also she has started a great non-profit which we will post about next!
