I do wonder how he expressed interest in Tina and how Tina found out that Newt likes her? He's not the type to just outright tell her that he likes her.

I think Tina will find that endearing and that's why she likes him. Plus Tina s someone who can be comfortable around the creatures which will be a plus for Newt.
